It's weird. CounterSocial has much more nimble servers, response time, but Mastodon seems to be the one that's pulling people over. Of course the latter cld be driving the former. But I have some skepticism whether a a decentralized framework can handle a rush of new people.

@joshtpm not to be purely superficial but CounterSocial looks odd

@mollyjongfast @joshtpm CounterSocial might be fine, but it's disconnected from the rest of the Fediverse. It's an island.

@mollyjongfast @joshtpm There's some weird history to it, like (if I recall correctly) their banning signups from Russia and other countries in the name of "security", which other people around the fediverse took as hostile to marginalized people and dissident groups within those countries. This generated some drama and bad blood, with a fair number of Masto communities deciding they wouldn't have anything to do with CounterSocial.

@mollyjongfast @joshtpm Masto and the wider fediverse have had spikes of new arrivals before. Basically every time Zuckbook or Hellbird did something foolish, or announced that they were about to do something foolish, we'd get an influx. Some of the activity would die down after a while, as people decided the place just wasn't for them, but the level never quite went back to what it was before.(The fediverse is largely but not wholly Mastodon. Servers can be established using other software, too, and they all inter-operate by virtue of sharing a common communication protocol.)

@mollyjongfast @joshtpm This migration *feels* bigger and different --- more wide-ranging, more widely advertised --- than the ones that came before. But I think the old-timers are handling it in much the same way as the previous spikes: "Well, time to upgrade the server rental and explain the oat meme again."(Oat puns were huge for a while. Before the days of oats, there was the time of giving pineapples.)
