Also *stop* saying that migration is easy! It is most certainly not. Yes, you can move your account without too much trouble but you lose all of your content. That's a big deal! It's the number one reason I'm being so slow in picking a new instance. I *don't* want to move any time soon. #mastodon #UX

@scottjenson I haven't tried it, but I guess you could capture your account's RSS feed in a text file of you wanted to preserve it.

@simonblackley You can also request an archive of your data including the content. But the ability to import it has many technical challenges I can think of. How do you prevent falsification of posts, would you retroactively federate all of them to all servers following you? What if it is years worth of content? Etc.@scottjenson

The replies from others would still remain with to old posts so now you'd have duplicates or you orphan all the replies. How do you prevent falsification of posts? @ondra @simonblackley That is a very fair point. I'd like to back up and examine WHY I want it.1. Historical: some questions/replies contain valuable info I want to keep2. Social: Recall who replied to me on a topic3. Validation, others can see what I've posted (at least recently) this clearly fades with time.My biggest problem with 'just download the CSV is that it just hides it away in a separate app (and is MUCH harder to browse)

@ondra @simonblackley @scottjenson It feels like there's a big opportunity for third-parties to improve the data retention story here. Automatic toot replication, static site generation, managed publishing and hosting of archives, and other tools to ensure you have a usable, share-able, up-to-date copy of your own data.
