So it turns out that certain services create bot accounts on Mastodon that mirror profiles on Twitter without permission. I found bot accounts using the name and images of myself and many people I know on Twitter. What to do? @runevision Yeah, I'm there, everyone's there. I feel like this guy is enjoying exploiting the identity problem that this federated space causes, where anyone can set up a profile with any data with no consent. These types of servers need to be immediately blocked at an instance level, this stuff needs to be nipped in the bud immediately.

@shana @runevision It's just a network bridge, and it's existed for years. Most people just use it to get news updates from Twitter only sources.Even if Twitter blocks API access it won't stop. People can mirror and archive websites. The EU has a system that does the same for fediverse public posts to data mine. This is how it's worked since the first web crawler/spiders were made.

@shana @runevision Banning the bridges would just help enforce monopolies for sites like Twitter in the countries that instituted the ban. Be careful what you wish for... Also if bluesky bridges to activity pub become common it will be more common, and two-way.

@runevision @shana I don’t recall any such terms when I got API access for another project years ago. Much less any guarantees from Twitter to end users. Good luck with your case. :shrugz:

@thendrix @runevision Copy without consent is not ethical, no matter what. The guy doing this claims it's an "ethical bridge", so he's either clueless or a troll. Regardless, his instance needs to be blocked, it's basically worthless spam taking advantage of existing content.

@shana @runevision It’s not just some guy as there are hundreds of servers. There is also the nitter frontend – which I mentioned in these threads before – to strip tracking and ads from Twitter threads. These are setup as bot only, so you have to opt-in to see them to begin with so I don’t see what the point of blocking will do as there are already hundreds of these servers. Fedilist failed several times for a reason. As long as you have a new domain name you have a new node. If you want a closed door experience on fediverse just whitelist only, and have an echo chamber. Also why bring up ethics when it comes to social media as we can’t even get primary laws enforced already? RE DHS and DNC actions with Twitter, facebook, Google, etc. Ad rev based services are right sizing as we speak, so being able to integrate old timelines into microblogging services will only accelerate IMHO.

@thendrix @runevision A copy of someone else's site posted up for SEO spam and clicks is basically what this guy is doing, and that's equally as bad as this. Web crawlers don't pretend to be the person they're crawling, so let's not conflate a search directory with SEO spam.

@shana @runevision All of the birdsite instances I’m aware of pay out of pocket with no ads.
