I think a fundamental conceptual distinction between here and the other place is that this social network is and has been used by people who prioritize their mental health over reach, while the other place was designed to manipulate you into using it, which included an aspect of incentivizing reach.Reach is growth mindset shit and, eventually, attracts conflict. Most of the people I know here favor a positive healthy experience over aspiring for reach.

To preempt responses of "that creates a bubble": bubbles aren't inherently bad. Nobody wants someone to pick a fight with them when they're just out at a coffee shop talking with a friend. People have a right (and a responsibility to themselves) to choose when and in what social spaces to engage with conflict. There is no moral obligation for anyone to indulge hostility or contentiousness in every space a person occupies, anytime someone demands it. Boundaries are good actually.

I think the unexamined core that is laid bare as people try to wean themselves from corporate, ad supported social media is exactly how much their design is influenced by advertising and addiction and how much that design influences behavior. It is so insidious and subtle that people mostly believe behaviors and expectations created by those systems are natural and come from themselves and not externally, calculatedly imposed and manipulated.

@lawremipsum Yeah. I want to expand my reach, which makes me a bad fit for the culture of most of the Fediverse. Kinda sad for me TBH, since I really like having my own instance and the idea of federated social media, but I'm not the biggest fan of the sort of people on it or what people usually do with it. It's like I can't really fit in anywhere, but I've had to suffer that my whole 28 years of life; one would think I'd be used to it by now...
