@pomstan If it's only my server's admin who can see it I'd hardly call that public. If that's the case then all my phone calls are public since my governement can listen to them.

@SeriousGuy @pomstan if you have an email account through google or Microsoft there are more than "a few" people that can read your messages. If you want more private comms you can use encrypted and/or p2p messaging protocols. If you want to protect email from snooping admins you use pgp and/or run your own mail server, but that doesn't stop someone you send an email to from forwarding or copy/pasting the content.Federation is just the use of a protocol to communicate across the larger pool of compatible servers. Email is federated using SMTP. Fediverse is federated using activity pub. Matrix is federated using the matrix protocol which supports end to end encryption (good for private discussion). In all of these cases there is some amount of data that can be left on the server. Your alternative to that is p2p protocols.
