Here's a cool thing, #NZTwits - most of your data is now physically hosted in Aotearoa. Sure, the public stuff is federated out, but your profile, your DM's to other locals etc are all on our shores. When was the last time you had the option of data sovereignty? Australian feds can't just force your AWS/Azure data centre to give you without telling you. It's not a huge deal but it's nice.

@dznz So we're vulnerable to domestic production orders. I guess something for people to consider in their threat models.

@norightturnnz yes, correct, which is why it’s good to know and discuss. (I choose it over the .au legal framework but of course for someone that’ll be the other way around)

@dznz Yeah. For people who worry about such things - and I generally don't - there are pros and cons to domestic vs foreign hosts, depending on your threat model.

@norightturnnz @dznz I prefer my or anyone else's data to be safe from requirement to hand it over to US State Department under US CLOUD Act. It's the principle regardless of actual content

@Kay @dznz Generally speaking, yes. At the same time, distance breeds disinterest. The Eye of Sauron isn't much interested in people here (until it is). For some, local little eyes might be a bigger threat.

Great to see you in the 'verse @norightturnnz !Keep in mind Snowden's revelations on #5Eyes. Data gathered by spooks in US or Aus is just as accessible to GCSB as stuff gathered here. Thanks to GCSB Act, their data are all available to the ordinary cops. So (most common) foreign hosting can't protect you from local interest, but it can mean you and your data are covered by unfamiliar laws in other jurisdictions, with limited protections for your privacy and other human rights.@Kay @dznz
