i wonder if a lot of the annoyance/misunderstanding about picking an instance stems from how a lot of people just assume that everyone uses gmail or maybe outlook for email, to the point where telling people yr email address if it it's a non-standard domain can be a chorenetwork effects, and all that shit. idk.

@selectric @madrush It's also ever changing, though.For example, I tried recommending https://fosstodon.org only to find that they also changed from open registration to moderator-reviewed registration. (and moderator-reviewed registration, according to https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2022/04/official-apps-now-available-for-ios-and-android/, drives a lot of people away.)Meanwhile, the list of top webmail providers have changed only once in my lifetime: I can tell people to just make a Hotmail and it would be valid advice over the past 25 years.
