I currently have two big feature requests for the fediverse:# Reply BackfillI understand that that's because of how #ActicityPub works. Each instance only knows about content by accounts that at least one user was subscribed to when it was posted. But most fediverse software got an API which could be used (maybe on an app level #tusky) to load more replies from the server of the original poster. On the web, I often click through to the original post, but on the apps, that's too cumbersome.

# SearchI am a heavy search user. On websites with no search field, I try common URL queries (eg. WordPress uses ?s=searchterm). On Twitter I memorized many advanced queries and poked around to find new ones (eg. -min_faves:5 finds Tweets with fewer than 5 faves). I regularly search for the FedFinder URL to see what people say about it and help when they have questions or bugs. I can't do that in the fediverse.Maybe you can help me understand why the public timelines shouldn't be searchable.

@Luca the positive results you created with public search, are shadowed by people stalking you by search or doing search collect marketing data. Both not impossible here, but I guess it is lots harder to accomplish. Personally, I would love to have search too.

@Luca also, it seems I can't follow a specific #hashtag, which would be a great feature...

@katzentratschen @ummjackson Thanks. I read that.I know of the dog piling issue. Certain groups are looking for posts about a topic to then share it in a toxic way ("haha , so stupid") and/or be assholes in the replies. My behavior would probably fall into the uninvited insertion category. I want to help people, who have issues with my tool. But maybe I need to let go of being able to do that.

@oliver Search is hard as a scaling problem, but easy on a theoretical level for servers that got an API like all mastodon instances. You simply collect the local timeline for each server. Some servers have turned that off, so those would be excluded, but everything else could be found. But I don't even want to think about building it, before understanding the reservations people have.

@Luca it was a decision taken which is in my opinion wrong, I hope that will be changed at some point.

@moritzw The advanced web view at least has hashtag columns and following is being discussed https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/1096 . But following Hashtags is a hard problem with ActivityPub because of how posts are distributed. As a result you would probably only see posts your instance knows about.

@Fripi Search would be another burden for the servers, a third party service could solve that (no need for every server to do all the indexing and stuff) and add some friction to reduce negative effects.

@Luca Status backfill is also my #1 feature request. The most relevant Github issue I could find is:https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/14017But there's at least a similar feature request for statuses of newly followed accounts: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/34Anyone interested can ๐ those.

@Luca is am worried it will result in exactly that, but that is not wanted. It would expose the internals to a huge crowd that can be complicated.I am still convinced that it will happen no matter what. If Mastodon doesn't solve it and is successful someone will build a search function. And then there will be no control over it.

@Luca the same could be done to show followers of external profiles. Currently you have to go to the original server to see the full list, but it is hard to follow accounts you see there...

@Luca For the time being, you can channel questions by building a FAQ that is being linked on your web interface and github, such that whoever comes across your tool, has a way to obtain first source infos.

@Luca Full text search can be used to find people or posts to harass, even if the person isn't publicly making it available to search.1: "I'm not a fan of our Conservative party. They have treated people badly recently"2: "I'm not a fan of our #conservative party. They have treated people badly recently"Post one is an opinion put out into the world without specifying that people looking for the word conservative can find it. The user hasn't opted into the word conservative being used to find their post.Post two welcomes people finding it when searching for the conservative tag. This way of doing things means that you can't go trawling the public timeline to find people that post about a subject off-hand, then harass them. There is an option in mastodon that allows full-text search of your OWN posts. This is useful to find a post of yours, or a reply to a post if its fairly old, and you forgot to tag it.
