Saw an old boss of mine rambling on Twitter about how Mastodon / fediverse is never going to be A Thing. He then went on about how it's unintuitive, too hard to use, and has the same appeal as a BBS or forums.I wanted to argue, but it's obvious that he's not going to change his mind. Fuck it, we don't need him.

@sean Oddly, I was just sitting here thinking pretty much the same thing.

@mkarliner The "we don't need him" part, or the "things need to be better" part?I definitely agree with the position that certain things need to be improved (I wrote an in-depth article about it), but we're at an interesting time where lots of people want to try this out, and a handful of people who have never tried it just want to be negative and say it'll never work.

@sean I came to this conclusion with people who don't want to try it too. Clearly they'd be bad for the platform anyway, joining because they want an alternative to the thing they already have, not because they want to try something new.

@sean Mostly the "don't need them". I feel this is a new community, the ease of use issue is a good selection mechanism.

@sean I hate how much I am seeing this argument. People used to say that they didnt really “get” how twitter worked before it got really big. New stuff always takes some learning. I really don't think the fediverse is all that complicated. It does take some effort to understand it initially though. Is “too much effort” a good enough reason to avoid something that has so much potential to help society??

@twizzay I think what bothers me so much about it is how quickly some people get dismissive of it, without ever giving it an honest effort.

@sean Every time people are saying something isn't gonna be a thing, it becomes a thing :3

@sean I think folks have this notion that decentralization is unstable. Its weird. There used to just trusting some org to do something. Not putting faith in humanity to take care of itself. Twitter is still that “stable home” for some people. Maybe if Musk destabilizes it enough then Fedi will garner more users. And it wont be that hard to put in the effort anymore. However I do think people need to stop thinking about Mastodon/Fedi as a Twitter replacement. It is so different than twitter.

@sean I tell everybody that if they're just looking for a twitter clone not to come they will be disappointed. This requires another way of thinking.
