I see several users on mastodon.gamedev.place wondering whether they should refrain from posting non-gamedev content (applicable to any thematic #Mastodon instance). You *can* post any content!Just use the post visibility option to configure where it should appear. If you want to share non-gamedev stuff a lot, set it as Unlisted. This way it won't appear in the gamedev-focused Local timeline. #FediTips

Personally, I'm also fine seeing non-gamedev content in the Local timeline, as long as it's not the majority (I'd expect still 50% gamedev talk or more). Especially with the current size of the instance, it's fine.If we reach a size with multiple toots per minute then we should make sure to use the visibility properly for off-topic.

@akien maybe a good interim rule would be to just use CW for offtopic here? that more or less hides it in local but still lets people who want to view it based on it's topic click in, and still shows up in federated on other servers. That's already kinda the "unwritten" rule on most servers it seems.

@raptor85@mastodon.gamedev.place @akien@mastodon.gamedev.place as an outsider: that's a bit annoying. And also with with enough people it will get annoying for people in the server. Visibility was made for use cases like this.

@ignaloidas @akien true, it's just a shame there's only all or nothing options, not just "hide from local", I fear over time that could cause more devs that regularly talk about off-topic things to other servers entirely, even though their on-topic posts would be amazing here in this local.

@raptor85@mastodon.gamedev.place @akien@mastodon.gamedev.place true. But I think that will sort out over time.I'll be honest, I think most of the devs will bounce within a couple of weeks. Those who will stay, will know how to do it.

@ignaloidas @akien I don't really think it's a "know" issue though, I think it's more of an issue that for some people their posts are more 50/50 split gdev and other topics, I see from time to time some people already talking about making multiple accounts on different servers for this, and many just giving up and going to the main social instances.I didn't find an existing so I opened a issue here, I may look into making a patch myself but I'm not great at ruby or js https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/19820

@raptor85@mastodon.gamedev.place @akien@mastodon.gamedev.place Eh, I think it's just that people need to know. Switching visibility is easier than switching accounts. As for the issue, I think you misunderstood. Unlisted still federates, as usual, but only shows up on your profile. People following you still get it, even if they're on other servers. It just doesn't show up in Local and Federated timelines.

@ignaloidas @akien no, I get that, it's the "not showing up in federated timeline" thats an issue, lots of people use federated and not every post is for followers only if it's not about gamedev. I opened an issue on it, hopefully someone better than me at webdev thinks it's a good idea, the further I get from C/C++/and asm languages the more lost I am :/

@raptor85@mastodon.gamedev.place @akien@mastodon.gamedev.place Eh, it's not followers only. Anyone can see. It's just not pushed out for everyone. As for full federated timeline, I personally don't see many people using it. Maybe at the start, to find people? But with time, you outgrow it.But I'll say that I doubt that such an option gets added, that needs a fair bit of work across all of the network, and that's hard.
