I kinda feel like fears about fedi getting Eternal September'd are kind of overblown. fedi is really not a distinct community that could be ruined by an influx of new users, it's a loose network of different communities where the people you choose to interact with it literally codified in the form of what gets federated to your server. if you don't like the normies, you can just choose to not interact with them and not let them onto your instance. in extreme cases you can fediblock as wellI maintain that having a more diverse group of people on fedi other than fossbros, chuds, and anti-chuds would ultimately be a good thing

@nyx@social.xenofem.me tbh i think that kind of falls apart though, the renote button exists. i've already seen my posts spreading into areas of fedi that just didn't exist a month agoI maintain that having a more diverse group of people...i suppose i agree there though

@nyx feel like fedi wad already eternal septembered tbh.I think the best thing we can do is to push selfhosting propaganda and push other activitypub/other decentralised computing services.Make the internet cozy again

@natalie I mean yeah it's not perfectly immune to those sorts of problems but I think it's at least a step up from completely centralized social media "networks" insofar as there are ways for parts of the network to more or less self-organize themselves, since there isn't an algorithm trying to force engagement to happen across the network

@insurrectowolf mhm, there are comfy little corners of fedi but there's also a lot of toxicity that is inevitable when it's largely comprised of small communities of people whose online presence is mainly being very politically shrill. though fedi already basically had an Eternal September moment when gab and poast became a thing anyways
