I don't understand why people seem to expect that if they sign up here they must get famous instantly or it's a failure of the platform. Did you not spend years growing your network on Twitter?

@Gargron To be honest I have experienced the opposite, even in the begin stages. People tend to have a lot more interaction on here than for example on Twitter. What does 'fame' mean?

@stux @Gargron fame is pretty pointless on Fedi. Since the toots are lined chronologically folks here have to scroll through a good length to find a toot worth their engagement. AND THAT IS ITS APPEAL TO ME! it makes me feel like I found something, as opposed to any other social media where evrything is shoved down your throat.

@Gargron I had that discussion earlier about the same topic. I think some people still don't understand that the Fediverse in general doesn't work as any of the commercialized social networks. Maybe they didn't understand that the people who use the Fediverse aren't exactly the same audience as it is on Twitter, for example. It's not even the same audience even between instances.Also, I guess some of them who expect to get famous quickly probably used bot/paid accounts to inflate their numbers. I don't think we need those people here.

@Gargron I want to network with people, share ideas, and grow as person/artist. Anything else feels pretty secondary, honestly. I'm finding it weird that when I'm looking for opportunities to gain experience, everyone seems to think I'm meaning money lol. Inversely, if I don't ask for money for something like editing, it seems nobody wants to hire because they feel the work will be inferior. It's the 18 year with 10 years of work experience chicken/egg problem again 🤣

@stux @Gargron I think maybe people just expect to be interacted with more than they are. I've found that to get interactions on here, you typically have to respond with others because your posts aren't pushed by an algorithm, except the trending tab on #Mastodon and its forks

@aurynn I joined the fediverse by starting my own Masto instance (and before that I briefly tried to do the same with GNU Social over a decade ago now, but things weren't nearly fully baked enough before Mastodon LOL)Shouting into the void on a brand new instance with 1 user following 1 other remote user discovered on a blog post has to be the most challenging "discoverability" scenario possible yet I've had much more success making connections here than I ever did on Twitter.Perhaps that is because I am a weirdo and have an unconventional attitude about social media. I found the vast majority of my Facebook and Twitter connections to be very shallow so I didn't care about bringing them with me. For a month before leaving those sites I made a few posts saying I was here now, and if they couldn't be bothered to follow me here I wasn't important enough to them, so they weren't important enough to me.Probably best to organically discover new people over time and not try to find specific people.@Gargron

@Gargron Within a year, we had roughly 5,000 twitter followers, about 4 of which interacted with us on a regular basis.Within a year here we've grown a network of 300 people, easily 30 or 40 of which interact with us on a regular basis.I've often found people on Masto I can hold actual intelligent discussions with - and that rarely happened on twitter.Folks who just want 'followers' or 'fame' aren't people we need here.
