@nova Why would QOTO be on there, we have pretty clear anti-hate speech rules and are pretty strict on enforcing bans for hate speech.... Thats weird.

@pganssle @nova My understanding is that qoto federates with undesirable instances. So while qoto itself is fine, it leads to less fine content coming though. I actually moved from qoto because I couldn't follow my friends on other instances

@aut @nova Yeah, I think certain folks (notably the mastodon.technology admins) didnât like that qoto doesnât usually do full instance bans, particularly for certain reasons, and banned qoto for that reason, not because it actually affects any of the servers who refuse to federate with them.Itâs not like federating with qoto brings in posts from other instances they federate with, especially not ones that are actually banned.

As they said, if you block an instance and someone from another instance shares from that instance, then you cant see that boost anyway. So the argument has always been moot and self defeating.Moreover, any âbad contentâ wouldnt get shared in the first place since our instance is made up of good actors who dont promote content that is contrary to that.@pganssle @aut @nova

@dimi I am also generally against open block lists... that said there are a few that are responsible and try to vet and fact check additions to it. Thanks so much for running this instance!

@peterdrake There are about a dozen really bad actors, once you block those servers you cover the bulk of the content. Works well. The main reason we **dont** block servers was at the LGBTQ's communities request. At the time Milo was on Gab and they used accounts here to follow him so they could see when he doxxed someone and use it to warnt he community (as was the norm at the time and a big deal). In fact its why we added the subscribe feature, specifically so they could follow people without being identifiable as doing so.Its one reason we dont block, its like putting blocks in a web browser, it hurts the victims too.@zleap @meeper @nova @sarvo @waifu

@freemo The reason for confusion might be that if instance X blocks your instance, then you can still see boosts of content from instance X (as long as the booster is on an instance that doesnât block yours/isnât blocked by yours), as opposed to when the block is in the opposite direction. @pganssle @aut @nova

@robrykDepends on the server.. some servers poll, some dont. QOTO has a subscribe feature for example, thats based on polling so if you subscribe rather than follow you will get it even if blocked.@pganssle @aut @nova
