If #Twitter had no algorithm, despite it being centralized, would it function in a similar way to #Mastodon and the #fediverse?

@james algorithmic sorting is just one difference. federation and local management/community building is a far bigger different

@james No. One of the reasons is that here you can whole groups of people by muting certain servers.

@james Because Twitter mods would be the only source of possible moderation, disallowing anything that can make them lose money.

@james No because it would still be universally censored by a central corporation. At least #Mastodon is censored in chunks thanks to having multiple servers, you can join whichever you consider best for you and it naturally reaches a balance for everyone.

@james I think so. I have my feed set to chronological, have muted a bunch of terms that get rid of the garbage on the tl so all I see are tweets and retweets (no likes, follows, etc), and I patched the apk through revanced to remove ads. All of that definitely improved the overall user experience

@james no, because the local fed structure makes moderation much more effective. there is a reason why people coming from Twitter are surprised how non-toxic the community here is. Also, I am not sure, but I can't see how influencers would work here. Also no ads.

@james no twitter does not aggregate whole tweets like mastodon does with fedi toots. On twitter you can follow a certain hashtag or user but not everything that's being tweeted more or less in real time

@james algorithm is one thing, curation is completely another thing. If twitter remains centralized then it will still be a large entity curating everything that is happening under it. On the other hand with Fedi, I can have my own instance and i can curate my own feed to my liking, remove the voices i dont want to hear and amplify the voices i do like to hear. Fedi gives me total power of my feed!

@james NO - because it treated you like an audience vs a network ;)

@james It would still have centralized moderation and policing

I probably should've just set this poll to just one day. Most of you voted no, and I answered why in the start of my new Twitter thread below:https://mstdn.starnix.network/@james/109293564940196985

@james Mastodon would still be better moderated.
