I've never been on a cruise before. Have you? Did you have a good time?

@roundy my Carnival experience can be summed up by what should be their tag line. Carnival, the Super 8 of the sea.

@roundy Great opportunity to be herded like cattle. People also tend to confuse a lot of food with good food, the latter is not generally available. Also, if you like being a captive patron at the world's most expensive bar, then a cruise may be just the thing for you.

@roundy I’ve never been (I have no desire to be trapped on the open ocean with 1000, or more, strangers) but I have several family members who have. From what they have told me, some are good, some suck. My one word of advice if you are thinking about it, stay away from ones that offer huge discounts.

@roundy I have been on two and can not recommend. No space by the pool unless you get there super early. When you port you have limited time at the place. Its very scheduled if thats your thing on vacation. Dont go. Go some place cool.

@roundy My brother went on a week long one for around $500/person. He told me the ship was populated with what he would only describe as residents of a trailer park. Many “minorities” feeling and acting like royalty and treating the workers as their personal servants. Ordering them to do this and that, using racial slurs, etc.

@roundy I took my mom on one over 10 years ago. It’s probably fun for a certain type of people - definitely not for those that think hell is other people. Also, I have a sensitive sense of smell so maybe it was only an issue for me, but I just smelled whiffs of sewage the entire time.

@roundy A lot of the responses make good points. However, the one cruise I went on was nice. It was a Norwegian ship, the pearl, and it was all old people. Pools and amenities were all open and the ship had decent restaurants that could accommodate my Bride's allergy. Drinks were included as was room service. Not a bad choice for a honeymoon. Basically a nice hotel stay with changes in scenery. We didn't leave the room much though😏

@roundy yes.I worked an America's top Chef cruise. They are basically 11 story casinolette/hotels floating aimlessly in the ocean.I found it painfully boring.Even if you really like just sitting at a pool reading, there are a bazillion better places to do that.

@roundy I found it funny that the minority group always complaining about being treated terribly were the ones dropping racial slurs on the Hispanic and Asian workers (and even other guests).

@roundy Took the whole family as the guests of a chronic cruiser. We took most of our dinners in the fancy restaurant (no extra cost for us, dress code enforced) and we didn't purchase alcohol on board (wink wink). I would've liked to spend more time in certain places and less in others but having the vacation 'on rails' was nice in certain ways.I'd do it again, but it won't replace my typical vacation.

@roundy I've been shopping around cruises too and have focused on the European river cruises; people I know who've taken them love them. Friends said it's like a tour with no driving and your hotel moves with you, plus they're the perfect size: small enough to find cruise buddies during the trip but big enough to avoid the people you don't like. The ocean going stuff is too big for my tastes, but feedback was that the experience varies enormously depending on the particular cruise line.

@roundy I've been on a couple pre covid. A Norwegian Cruise line and a Royale Caribbean Cruise line. It was actually quite fun. For being so many people on there, it sure doesn't feel like it. Post covid I have not and will not because I won't be held captive if there is an "outbreak" and I won't get the required jab.

Also, most you can bring a couple bottles of "wine" get a corker and bottle up rum or whatever in a wine bottle. Slap a label on it and you're good to go. @CSB As long as I bring along Listerine and stay unvaxxed, I will walk amongst the diseased without fear, as I have for the last two years.

@roundy only been on Disney cruise ships. Don't know how they compare to others. My idea of a vacation is relaxing, so my favorite parts of the cruise are the times when there is nothing to do. It's a VERY expensive way to do nothing.

@BoredStupid @roundy if you're not loaded AND you can't have a good vacation without booze, skip cruises and resorts. Cheaper to do it dry.

@roundy my wife and I did our honeymoon on a Celebrity cruise of the Alaskan Marine Highway -- straights and fjords up the coast from Vancouver to Glacier Bay. Speaking for 14 years ago: the ship was neat and tidy and all of the staff and guest speakers were super friendly and helpful. I don't remember the entertainment personnel. I remember whitewater rafting on glacier meltwater.

@roundy the Juneau downtown port area morphs into a daily cruise ship shop with inexplicable jewelry shops and native trinket shops around the waterfront that's almost psychically segregated from the rest of the town during cruise season. Glad we chose whitewater rafting instead of hanging out in the downtown area.
