Dear academia, before your least favorite billionaire buys off @SlackHQ@twitter.com, you might want to take a look at @element_hq@twitter.com, a free, decentralized and secure alternative based on @matrixdotorg@twitter.com.There is a free internet out there — we just need to use it!https://element.io/

@tiago hot take: if all those instances of Rocket Chat or Mattermost that universities installed in the last months were replaced by Element (or anything Matrix compatible), we'd be a step further already.

@felwertAgree completely!Universities used to be at the forefront of the internet's infrastructure — they were the first to implement email, web servers, etc. Now some unis don't even have their own email! It's all offloaded to microsoft or similar. It all changed slowly when academia started to be taken over by administrators, instead of academics.Universities need to take back this role! We need mastodon, matrix, email, etc at universities. It would be a game changer.

@felwert @tiago Have you tried Zulip? For me, it worked quite well to replace slack and even improve some aspects (e.g. latex code integration)I understand that the point in Element would be decentralized, inter-communicable instances?

@maguilera @felwert I never tried Zulip — I will take a look. However, matrix is supposed to be an underlying open protocol, of which Element is an implementation.Ideally, things like Zulip would be implemented on top of @matrix, to enable wide interoperability.

@tiago @felwert @matrix thanks for the replies! I found this thread useful to get an idea of the differences btw the two https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=27149909It seems that some slack-like functionalities in Zulip are yet far away in Element. But completely agree that a federated solution is the way to go (Zulip has bridge integrations with other protocols like matrix and IRC but they aren't too nice so far). So the choice of one over the other may depend on the specific preferences/necessities of groups
