Horrified by what's going on at the bird site. This month marks 14 years since I joined. The most loyal I've been to any online place, it feels weird detaching. I'm sagld to see it change but that's technology, it's ancient, and time to see it fly. Our tools really are only as good as the people who shape them, use them, care about what they are used for. And as far as community spirit goes Mastodon reminds me a lot of what made organic Twitter good back in November 2008.

@jen I joined Twitter in 2007 and was thinking the same thing. Discovery is a bit of an issue here though with so much fragmentation across instances.

@JonathanMosen if you want to be discovered!! I feel it's only a problem if people don't find ways to solve it and that is happening already through the community, boosting and community mods who are phenomenal. Hashtags and automation etc will help users connect, it's really just having the people to invent and popularize ways to make that easier (I reckon)

@jen> if you want to be discovered!!Exactly. I've posted in other threads about how the segmentation of the 'verse makes it much harder for trolls and griefers to find targets to harass. People from vulnerable groups can create safe bubbles here without constant mod firefighting.@JonathanMosen @blindscribe

@strypey @JonathanMosen @blindscribe also feel in terms of discovering other things, ideas or people... for me, this feels better than trying to discover things in an anything goes, status driven personalities feed. Closer to how ppl do it for each other IRL... bumping into things because you said or did a thing, or made a recommendation. Hashtags have utility value again! I find tw!tter useful for news/topics... but on a personal level, feel like #mastodon is a place to be more "present".
