#fedi folks: one thing (aside from quote tweets) I miss from Birdsite is the helpful #translate feature. Many of the brilliant folks I follow do not speak English natively, and my own language skills suck. At least within the app (#Tusky) there's no easy way to translate their wisdom. Is this something that could be added to either the app or Masto-wide?I looked on the mastodon GitHub and it looks like it can be enabled at the instance level? https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/19218

@privacat Not exactly the same as a quote retweet, but what a number of people do (and also to add CW before boosting) is to reply without the mention and boost your own reply. The lack of QRT functionality is to keep people in the conversation and not "pointing somewhere to talk about it with a separate group", commonly used for dunking on the quoted message.

@edd Oh, now that's a concept I hadn't thought of, and that might be an elegant enough solution to what I want. The problem I find with only replies within a conversation is that it's not very inclusive (especially with no real 'search' feature.I have a shit memory for who should/might benefit from being included in a thread, even though their insights are helpful and add value - QTs helped with that. I rarely used it for dunking on people (and most of the folks I follow were the same).

@privacat @edd That was left out deliberately. A lot of Mastodon’s early pioneers were in vulnerable groups, and had QTs used against them for dogpiling, like “check out what X said, then encourage them to harm themselves” kinds of things.

@edd It was more to add context, broaden discussion or improve the dialog by polling the hivemind -- which, for my narrow band of weirdos (#privacy / #dataprotection folks) genuinely added to the substance of the thread. I get how different comunities' mileage may vary though.

@privacat That looks cool to add! The change is part of the upcoming as-yet-unreleased version, though, and isn’t available yet on the stable version of the software we’re running. I’ll update to this shortly after it’s released, though.

@tek Ahh! Didn't realize that was part of a new branch. Excellent -- can't wait til the new one comes out.
