@doctroid That's a fair question. I would argue it's ok, since there is a large community on Mastodon using Arduino products.I would suggest muting the account in question rather than report it.But you are right: if Mastodon takes off we are going to see more and more companies migrate here, and it's going to be annoying. Right now most users are individuals, or very small companies, and I hope it stays this way.

@ParadeGrotesque One reason I didn't report it immediately is it didn't annoy me — I use Arduinos (well, clones 😆 ) and it was of interest to me.But I'm concerned about having a strict NO ADVERTISING policy and then saying "well, this advertising is okay". I see that as leading to a chaotic situation and accusations of unfairness.I've also seen someone promoting their kickstarter, again not something that annoyed me but seems like a policy violation.Wondering how tenable the policy is.

@doctroid Yup, I get your point, and it is a good one. Let me put it this way:The following is acceptable:- Individual, posting from time to time to say: "hey, by the way, here is my shop / etsy / youtube channel, send me some $$$ if you like it"- Small company, introducing a new product, or talking about the dev of their latest & greatest. Again, once in a while.The following is NOT:- Posting ALL the time, CONSTANTLY, about whatever product you are sell, and nothing else.

@doctroid In other words it's one thing to promote your work intelligently and post interesting stuff in between, and it's another to post NOTHING BUT self-promotion.As I have posted before: we want a conversation, not a competition to be able to know who is the loudest and most annoying...

@ParadeGrotesque For that matter... is the strict NO ADVERTISING policy a fediverse-wide thing or is it a per instance thing? Is there even such a policy in effect on this instance? All the about page says in Mastodon Covenant which does not seem to mention advertising.

@doctroid There are unwritten community rules. If an instance was going to host nothing but marketers, that instance would be "de-federated" (cut off) from the rest of the Fediverse pretty quickly.The same thing applies to, let's say, MAGA people and other neo-nazis: it's one thing to have a couple of users behaving like asses, it's another to actively court them (see: Gab, Parler, poa.st, etc)

@doctroid Moderation is a dark art, and the Moderator Cabal here at SDF has some good, experienced people on it.But seriously, though, you will figure it out quickly with a bit more experience. Same thing with email spam: you know you don't like it and you know it when you see it. 🤓 See for instance MNT for a company that is interesting in its marketing approach on Mastodon, or Laemeur here on SDF who is an artist who sells things, but not on every single post.

@BoogieMoscovitch @doctroid Relax, this is not rocket science: most spammers are just that: spammers, and they get kicked out pretty quick, because they will just spam & spam & spam & ... (get banned).SDF is very art / creative oriented and we usually manage a fair moderation system. It's not perfect, but we are getting better at it.
