@andrewstroehlein Have you tried https://fedifinder.glitch.me/ yet? It will scan the accounts you follow on Twitter for a Mastodon handle. Download the csv, and import it in your Mastodon acct.

@bibliotequetress @andrewstroehlein Maybe HRW should run their own server.

@bibliotequetress @jeroen Thanks for the vote of confidence! We’re still just getting our heads around things here, so we’re a long way off from that, I think. But tell me: if an organization does run a server, and say all staff are on that server, doesn’t that make it easy for other servers to block it? If I government allows people to be on Mastodon but only on their approved servers, then they can block the organization en masse, no? (Apologies for my ignorance)

@andrewstroehlein @jeroen I want to make sure I understand the question. Let's say I start a server for Cold War historians. Harvard then starts their own. Harvard requires that everyone teaching there only use Harvard-created servers. Then, they block my server from the Harvard history server. Is that the rough idea (switching out nations etc for universities)?

@bibliotequetress @jeroen I was thinking more like human rights organizations & governments. The organization has its staff on its server – wouldn’t that make it easy for a government to block them all? And if it’s more than staff - say, people generally interested in human rights - that would be even worse, no? The government could block a large number of people talking about abuses in that country? Again, no idea if this is correct. I’m just trying to understand.

@andrewstroehlein Hi there Andrew! :blobcathearts: Welcome! :nkoWave: Maybe I can help with that! A country /could/ block a 'domain' (instance) for example. This happened to us in China. (mstdn.social) but there are ways around that, for example we have a fully working with SSL encrypted Tor :tor: URL for people in risk areas, see more info here: https://mstdn.social/aboutThere are ways to 'close' Mastodon and make it approve only also, both user and federation @bibliotequetress @jeroen

@stux Thanks for this explanation - and in a way it’s good to hear that the regime in China is trying to block. That surely means you’re doing something right! 😀 @bibliotequetress @jeroen
