Tor is fine for what it does, and it's just another tool that is becoming more relevant with normal sites like KF being censored, but it's slow and it does have its compromises, though no government wants to reveal them as they're probably used for more than we know. Most of the cases where people are unmasked are usually due to basic opsec errors like one kid who called in a bomb threat to his college to delay a test but used a school computer to do it in the library when it wasn't busy so they had video feed of him doing it at the school. That or Ross who used the same username across multiple platforms.

The majority of the cases are other exploits that aren't direct Tor compromises but the one I heard about recently sounded like it was specifically a Tor compromise, though that might just be because of the telephone game effect as I can't find the specific case. Though like you said they can and probably have enough exit nodes compromised that they can unmask people as needed but it's probably used for government actor countermeasures more than anything. I don't think they'd pull it even if KF went full Tor only, the amount of problems KF causes is non existent to them in comparison to losing whatever hooks they have in Tor. Then again who knows the government has gotten excessively retarded.

There aren't many public Monero I2P nodes.There are seeders that provide an initial node list that helps you find other peers in the network, but that's not what's being discussed here.

There's other similar overlay networks (Freenet, Loki, Urbit, etc) with differing levels of success or security.I think a lot of these are missing killer apps, and the ones they come up with are copies of clearnet apps from the past. If you can get ActivityPub and fedi running better than on Clearnet (better faster or censorship-resistant), maybe that's a start.

It should really only be used for convenience, if you're going to a place like KF I wouldn't really see it as an issue. It's like using a VPN on your normal browser, except you're making two hops instead of just one and there is a bit more legwork that would have to be done for someone to track you down. If you're doing something more sensitive than just shitposting on a legal website though I would just use the browser bundle. It's worth noting that using tor over brave instead of the browser bundle is going to give you a different user agent anyway. Brave does a really good job of fucking with it but it'll still be different so you won't appear as being with the rest of the blob with or without the normal tor bb window size if you're using brave.Like I said, it's just good for convenience if you're not doing anything too crazy. I use it for my fake fb account I use to contact people who worked on my game, for instance.
