I read this elsewhere: If trusted news outlets would start offering #Mastodon instances to their staff, that would bring some sort of verification and visibility. Think social.nytimes.com, social.heise.de etc. I'd love to read more from trusted journalists on the #fediverse and this could greatly help. (Again, not my idea but couldn't find the original author.) Boosts for visibility would be great. Reminder: Favorites don't help as on this other platform.

@ralf Sounds like a cool business opportunity as well: a company could provide ready-to-go Mastodon instances.Don't worry about setup, maintenance, updates, security, scaling, etc. in exchange of a monthly fee, and just setup your Mastodon instance with your own rules, your moderation, etc.

@davidstosik @ralf And it's cheaper than keeping people verified on Twitter. eg. https://masto.host/

@ralf I think the argument can be made that journalists should absolutely not be using platform which they cannot keep their interactions private. Imagine if an exec of a big, centralized platform was under investigation and whistle-blowers communicated with journalists through DMs. Even if the interaction was "I got dirt on XXXX, where can we discuss further?" That person is still exposed if the exec decides to access the database.

@psychxr @ralf fedi/mastodong is not the tool for thatif you want private interactions, it's extremely easy to leak that kind of """""""""""""""""""""""private""""""""""""""""""""""" interactionuse mail or something else

@ralf Also think how valuable that info might be for the rich and powerful to get ahead of stories if it was being sold through a back channel.

@ralf Most news outlets use 3p services behind the scene. If the services did it, the new outlets would do it.

@ralf companies and universities hosting their own instances is an interesting concept, but can be an issue once you leave the establishment. Not the best model to pursue IMHO, but I'm sure some people might find it appealing.

@ralf Up to a choice of words, this is a thing that some organizations do. What's going to happen to them - with almost every news story - is people are going to post some variant of this at them. The issue is that - unlike on Twitter - news outlets do not have the power to censor people who shitpost at them. You and your kind should just go back to Twitter, it is a better place for you.nigger.gif

@ralf Doing so would fix the verification issue. It prevents impersonation.> trusted news sourcesRemember that trust is always earned. Demanding trust means you don't deserve it.

@AmyZenunim @ralf @cadey >we should instead be satirizing and lampooning them until they feel deeply uncomfortable with the mere concept of the Fediverse to protect our user base.I agree that we should satirize and lampoon people who are afraid of people saying things they don't like.phases_of_trans.mp4

@ralf That is an interesting thought. But you have a lot of freelance workers in media. Working for more then one editorial. How to deal with that? Who should be visible and verified in that case? Presenters? News Anchors? Lead journalists?
