I realise people are willing to pay a little extra for convenience. However, a premium of £3.55 per kilo for trimmed sprouts is excessive, even if the pack size is also smaller.Normal sprouts £1.90 per kgTrimmed sprouts £5.45 per kgBTWI don't bother trimming, I just eat the wee stalks.#TeamRosenkohl #food

My weekly shopping has gone up in price from ~£45-50 to ~£60-70. That comparison is from March until now. I'm still buying pretty much the same things. That's without buying trimmed sprouts.

@fitheach We do our main shop at Lidl, and we've been noticing a marked increase even there. We tend to shop more irregularly, but you conveniently get e-receipts so it is easy to compare prices.

@helenlockhart I usually shop at either Lidl, or, more frequently, at Aldi. I enter my receipts into Homebank (saddo, I know). I've found prices have increased across the board. More than the quoted ~10% inflation.

@neglesaks @fitheach No such thing. Bake 'em in bacon fat, olive oil, pickled jalapeno, and mustard and they are infinitely tasty.

@fitheach @neglesaks This is probably true. It is also my general mix for roasting vegetables, which I often do to prepare them for sauces. For example, if you want a nice thick pasta sauce, cut up your Roma tomatoes and roast them outside with olive oil, oregano, and chives.Blend them when you are done and then tump in the other ingredients. If you do it right, requires almost no other seasoning. But for most recipes, I just want bits of tasty vegetable so I use the bacon fat mix.

@fitheach @neglesaks Interestingly, having animal fats present makes it easier to uptake nutrients from vegetables, even if it horrifies the health-oriented.

@fitheach @bruno Can you still get the "old-fashioned" Brussels sprouts with the slightly bitter taste in Scotland or Switzerland? I've tried here in Germany, but even the small "upmarket" greengrocers only carry the "modern" sprouts where the bitterness has been bred away.

@pandora @fitheach In the canteen we get imho modern ones. Privately, I would have to buy again. But I suspect that the organic sprouts are still old-fashioned.

@pandora The received wisdom is that sprouts harvested after the first frost will have a less bitter taste. My own sprout consumption supports this hypothesis.Frome time-to-time I do get more bitter sprouts, but, I'm not aware of them being marketed either way.@bruno

@bruno In the last few years it has become trendy to buy sprouts still attached to the stem. I've never bought them in this way. I wonder if they taste any different.@pandora

@bruno @fitheach @pandora In our country, you don't harvest Brussels sprouts before they have had a natural frost, only after that do they taste good.

@bruno Offhand I don't know the prices. A few years ago I made a mental calculation, and came to the conclusion they were very expensive. I've checked some stores online, but the sprout stems (stalks) aren't currently for sale.A price per kilo doesn't make sense, as the inedible stems are the heaviest part.@pandora

@fitheach That was my thought, that a price per weight would have to be too expensive. On the other hand, they have less work harvesting with this kind of sale. So they would have to be cheaper?@pandora

@fitheach Yeah, sure. But you have less waste and much lower processing costs. So let's not misunderstand each other. I am happy to pay fair prices. And if the farmer offers it at the market, I'm happy to pay him that too. But if the wholesaler makes extra money with it because it looks "fancy", I'm not prepared to pay even more for it. @pandora

@fitheach Our eco farmer sells them that way. You pay per stem, so the price is always a bit of an approximation. They don't taste any different, they are just very fresh and yummy. @bruno @pandora
