When do you expect the Steam Deck 2 to be released?

@riley probably. Maybe they will do an upgraded version in the meantime as well with the same hardware but with tweaks such as slighty larger battery? Who knows

@boilingsteam @riley slightly larger battery plus OLED screen? I think an updated screen would make a lot of people reconsider who didn't go for the Deck or were waiting

@boilingsteam Not any time soon. They will probably release a different console akin to Steam Machines or standalone VR first.

@ImboSlice @riley I find the screen they chose to be of very high quality. But a larger battery? Oh yes...

@boilingsteam A new version would need to offer improved performance and battery life (for next gen games or a bigger/better screen). Valve is therefore dependent on hardware developers to design a more efficient chip that is still affordable (disregarding the worldwide inflation and supply shortages). Supporting another hardware variation requires resources from Valve and game developers, so a new version needs to be worth it.

@GlowingLantern it would still be a PC at the core using the same APIs so its doubtful the game devs would have to do anything more to support it.

@boilingsteam @riley it is a very good screen! However, my beloved Vita converted me into a forever OLED believer 🙏

@boilingsteam The value of a console is the stable hardware to develop for and test against. That’s why the Switch still hasn’t had a significant hardware revision. The fact that the Steam Deck doesn’t _require_ devs to support it is a way to break into the market. Valve hopes that devs will eventually see it as a “real” console at some point. The biggest reason why the Steam Machines failed, is that they _were_ just PCs. There wasn’t any added value for devs or players.

@ImboSlice @riley OLEDs still have durability issues if I remember correctly.
