My 16 years old niece has recently told me that she plans to study graphic design and is contemplating a career as an independent illustrator.Do any people from the #MastoArt crowd any advice for her? What do you wish _you_ had known at that age?

@juergen_hubert AI graphics generators did not exist a few years back so this will change everything

@boilingsteam When I started there was no photoshop and we designed everything by hand. I had to learn myself how to use the computer and graphics programmes, after I graduatedIn this field you simply have to understand that there will always be new tools, new fashions and new demands from the market, and be ready to adaptLiterally you study and practise for your whole career

@SMMarenco except that AI generators can turn a good idea into a illustration in a very short time. This is basically destroying the value of having humans in the loop for a lot of use cases

@boilingsteam Not really at the moment.AI can only turn a good idea into an illustration if that good idea is vague enough to please an undemanding customer. So, for the time being, it would occupy that slice of the market that has never been profitable for artists, e.g. those publishers who 'have no budget' or clients who expect to pay in visibility. Getting rid of them is definitely not a bad thing

@boilingsteam But the moment you are dealing with someone with VERY specific demands, that's when AI fails. If you are working with an art director, with a very clear vision of what he wants done, you are much sooner to get to work in the traditional way.If you need to put a precise element into an illustration, AI is not able to do it at the moment.AI, for now, is not intelligent enough to understand exactly what you are asking it to do.

@boilingsteam There is also the 'fashion' factor to considerNow it is very easy to spot an AI-generated image, they all have a certain look in the background. They are very popular now, but will they be equally popular five years from now?Working as a cover designer in publishing, I see the tastes and demands of the public and customers changing very quickly. What is very popular today will be considered old and out of fashion next year.

@SMMarenco There are currently billions being invested in better models as we speak, what you see now with SD and DALL-E is just the very beginning. Things are not static and will get much better with more training data. It's inevitable.

@boilingsteam We have to have the mentality to adapt and be ready to change quickly, which is crucial, whether we face the AI problem or notFor now, machines are not capable of critical thinking, decision-making and adapting to change as effectively as a human being

@boilingsteam Of course the game will change, of course the market will change. We have to change and adapt in turn, using all the tools at our disposal (including AI)Many prompters, I have experienced, are not able to tell when an image is good or not, because they lack the basics that we artists, on the other hand, have. When we compose an image, we do so knowing what we want to communicate and how, using colour, composition, light and iconography.

@boilingsteam All knowledge that is neither innate nor currently available to these machines (nor to many of the people who use them).Of course, those who have settled for mediocre work will continue to do so, because they are cheaper than good work (I apologise, I have a tendency to be a tad logorrhoeic)

@boilingsteam Of course, but we have to prepare ourselves for this, it is not a process from which we can turn back, whether we like it or not.We have to learn to live with it and use it to our advantage.I have read that there could be an increase in value for the work of traditional artists, as they are set to decrease.I mean, we have to study the situation, the market, the trends and adapt to them
