So if I got it right, Elon Musk is gonna monetize #Twitter by 'selling' features/subscriptions? 🤔This is kinda what Gab did. You know, that very ugly place of pure hate on the internet.. (Don't search for it, take my word). They forked(cloned) the #Mastodon code and demolished it, making it vulnerable for hackers and builing 'paid' features. And it's almost the exact same features Musk is talking about now.Very sad

@stux From what I saw, he plans to remove the whole "verification" aspect to the blue checkmark. It won't mean that brand or person has been verified and they're "official" anymore. It'll just mean they pay $8 monthly for Twitter Blue.lol. And Twitter Blue won't even be ad free?

@stux I mean, twitter is a social network who promotes hate speach and toxicity for profit. I don't have any problems with Musk destroying it. Althought I do have one with him exploiting his workers.

@stux Gab in of itself is brilliant, the way the majority of people who have accounts on it is not. Paying for Pro to support the platform when it was mostly ad free (those that were there weren’t intrusive) was fantastic, having the verified mark meant you wanted to support a startup essentially. Now though? It looks and operates like a cashgrab and that makes me so sad. The Mastodon we’re on today fixes this 😉

@IronCurtain@mstdn.social @stux@mstdn.social The recent development there is now that when one of them creates a new account (I long told them to just give up on Discord, but it sucks if their entire community is there but not elsewhere), Discord has written to the server's mods that they are now responsible to notice and report when they come back.In other words, Discord now considers the "server mods" and "owners" part of their enforcement team. Without paying them as employees.

@stuxSubscription services on their own, IMO, aren't necessarily bad. Less need for ads and less need for an algorithm to keep people doomscrolling (both of which are better for privacy). If it's free then you're probably the product, but if you're paying for it or it's run via donations (even if you're not paying, but you're subsidized by those who are) then you're probably not the product.

@stux As a former user of the echo-chamber since 2012 until recently I would not have minded the monetization and to pay $10-50 per year, that is IF Twitter would have provided a safe and well managed platform for people like me who are interested in fact-based information, informed analysis and opinion.

@stux Gab was always toxic, founded by an actual Nazi to be toxic. There is some chance that Twitter could detox, but only if ad revenue could be wholly replaced and the engagement-maximization algorithm killed. I doubt that will happen. Doubt there's enough sub revenue to make up for ad revenue, and investors will still want engagement maximization.

@stux The general idea isn't exactly horrible, but I must say I'm very disappointed by what Musk has announced. It ranges from at best dull and totally uncreative to at worst something that could ruin the website. *This* is what the "best and brightest" billionaire in the world can come up with!? He might as well give the $40 billion to me. Unironically I'd probably do a much better job improving Twitter than Musk; at least my ideas are better and more creative.
