Today, a journalist called me to chat about the "state of social media". I told them I've pivoted away from Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram entirely and am going all in on the Fediverse.

I was telling my wife about that journalist interview I did today. There's no bloody way they're going to quote me. "Why the hell would they want to interview you?" she asked.I don't know 🤷‍♂️

My former colleagues don't even respect my opinions anymore. They think I'm living in the past, and that I don't understand "modern" social media.OTOH, I think Facebook and Twitter peaked a long time ago -- and they should move on.

Right now, I think Big Social is having its MySpace moment -- but on an even bigger scale. And what replaces Big Social is up in the air. Some talking heads will say TikTok, but they only matter for as long as the USA tolerates them.

I still have a hard time talking about my past working at and building Hootsuite because I really want there to be a good end to that story. But I really think centralized social is done.

About 3 years ago, I had the idea of building a decentralized peer-to-peer social network. It was radical stuff. We set up a non-profit, and were going to build incredible new protocols. We even got a proof-of-concept going.

I used to be a big Fediverse detractor. I felt it didn't go far enough.I thought, "Why does this thing require instances? We're just remaking email all over again."But credit where credit is due: this has traction.

The Fediverse is not "perfect". I still think a server/client paradigm is a Band-Aid solution. Ideally, we should be doing this social stuff through peer-to-peer.But you know what? People actually use the Fediverse. That's why I'm in.

@atomicpoet The #fediverse is federated because it relies on communication through servers with domain names. Real peer-to-peer could require more advanced technologies such as the blockchain, hence why the original web and email were federated.

By the way, I'm not giving up on peer-to-peer social media. I've simply changed my goals. And whatever we make is going to be compatible with the Fediverse too.

@atomicpoet That is a huge jump and I envy you. Instagram is my source for laughs. Twatter to keep up on OSINT and sports. I deactivated and deleted Faceplant a few years ago. Never used tiktoc or vine. #Mastodon has incredible energy and everyone so far acts like real friends do. #Fediverse is an amazing place.

@james I'm a keen believer in the notion that how data is organized, communities become organized too. You know what happens when the network has hierarchies? People get organized into hierarchies. The reason we're in the current hellscape we're in is because that's how the Internet was built. And there's only so many times you can hit that reset button.

@atomicpoet I was feeling skeptical a few days ago about this federated thing—pining for the simplicity of a single platform. But the idea is starting to get under my skin at a philosophical level. Maybe the idea of a single monolithic global community has always been too simplistic and reductive. Maybe the idea of smaller communities more loosely connected—presumably with *some* common aspirations and values—is at once more realistic and doesn’t actually represent a loss of anything.

@Suzyanalyst1 Centralized social media is also dangerous. Even if you have a benevolent ownership group, it can be sold off to someone malicious. Now we're seeing that happen. This is why we must decentralize!

@atomicpoet Also, the advantages of the federated model for sharing power more widely, and preventing centralized control over Terms of Service and data, are becoming extremely apparent as we see what is happening at the other platform. There is a feeling of liberation being here you can’t anticipate—you need to experience it, which will presumably last do long as the platform is somewhat functional and gratifying.

@atomicpoet Near-perfection can be made, but at a brutal cost in several domains.

@Suzyanalyst1 The weirdest thing, IMO, about the fediverse is the oddities when interfacing with different software. That could be something as simple as post/note/toot length being different, so you can see a lot of text but can't reply in as much length. Or it can be hard to predict how your music/audio/video/link site's stuff will look on someone's microblogging site or whatever. And of course some things technically use ActivityPub, but don't really interact (e.g. NextCloud).

@john Yeah I haven’t done much with media here—apart from a few screenshots of notable events on Twitter at the beginning. I’m starting to just talk more. :)

@Suzyanalyst1 I wasn't referring to media uploads on microblogging services like mastodon/pleroma/misskey. Was talking about specialized services, like videos on PeerTube, pictures on PixelFed, music on FunkWhale, etc..It's a little weird to have a protocol that federates... stuff, and then expect the various services to... figure it out.
