I'm starting to come around to the idea of east coast supremacy because the way cities have been built on the west coast is just so fundamentally bad

yes I want there to be no density, I want everything to be organized into suburbs and different arbitrary zoning laws that results in low-rise cities with no vitality or culture. I want to have to commute literally everywhere <- statements made by the utterly Deranged

@eris I'm mainly thinking of like NYC I guess. the biggest cities on the west coast are like, SF and Seattle I guess (LA doesn't count because it's by far the worst example of a car-dependent hellscape), but SF fucking sucks. I haven't spent much time in Seattle to know how it fares in terms of the layout of the city

@stellarskylark that is literally never going to happen, in the US at least. the amount of infrastructure that has already been put in place to make cars the main way of traveling already completely changed the landscape of not just the whole country but also the cities that already existed

@stellarskylark it's not just that, we would have to reimagine our entire relationship to urbanization in the united states. cars became the main mode of transportation in the US as a response to decades of hostility to urbanization and an inability to actually respond to it, combined with the state putting money into other things and corporate lobbying. but it was all in place long before urbanization was even happening really, because american culture and american identity has this latent inherent hostility to the concept of urbanization

@potzerus @stellarskylark as I said in the other comment it's really not as simple as "bad corporations forced cars onto society", that's part of it but the issue is more complicated than that

@stellarskylark @nyx This can absolutely be done through city design and specific paving materials. It's just cities don't have enough money to get to that point, and overweight old white people will vote them out if they try.

@potzerus @stellarskylark I'm a layperson on the subject and don't know what the state of it is today, but historically it has been a discipline that was filled with ivory tower academics trying to plan cities in an abstract top-down fashion from the comfort of a desk rather than having direct experience with how cities function and what makes them successful

@placholdr I wish there were more things like that here and not in the middle of nowhere in alaska. it's neat but it is very much a product it being a tiny population in an isolated area.

@nyx yeah i know what you mean.rn the only places where having theses type of communal superstructures would only make sense in really isolated areas tbh.i mean commie blocks are a thing but they are just entirely residential areas and arent really small towns inside a single building which whittier is. id argue these apartment blocks would be more pleasant to be living in if they were planned like vertical towns rather than house that your sharing with x amount of peoplehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eIxUuuJX7Y

@placholdr man even commie blocks would be a huge step in the right direction. it sickens me thinking back to when I lived in the Bay Area how much of it is just fucking wasted land with like these low-rise buildings when there is a huge housing crisis that could be solved by building vertically.
