In the same vein as @Schneems's questions here, are there performance considerations when picking a local Mastodon instance? I've been seeing a lot of 502s, 504s, frequent lag, stale caches, etc. on mastodon.socialIt's understandable, but are there more reliable instances? I'm strongly considering switching to ruby.social for obvious reasons but I don't know if it matters.

@olivierlacan @Schneems seems like something server admins should advertise about their instances @james

@saturnflyer @olivierlacan @Schneems well it's hard to make any guarantees, but I strongly suspect that ruby.social will never have to deal with the same load that mastodon.social does, and as long as there are enough patrons to cover the hosting charges then I'd say it makes plenty of sense to make a home on smaller instances -- especially if you already have a decent network of followings.

@saturnflyer @olivierlacan @Schneems I think one thing an instance gives you, via the local timeline, is a pool of people you may be more likely to want to follow. But if you're already established then I don't think it really matters where your home instance is.

@saturnflyer @olivierlacan @Schneems here's another guide for how to migrate your account to another server: https://codingitwrong.com/2022/10/10/migrating-a-mastodon-account.html
