@Jim I can't think of one major internet company today without some sort of government buy-in. Back in the 90s/early 00s while we were all laughing at Ching Chong China's clumsy attempts to censor the internet, these types were planning for the future. They threw money, protection, and assets at tech companies in exchange for a foot in the door. We know about some of it, but much like this I imagine we only know the tip of the iceberg. While it was all happening, we were told "there is actually no free speech on the internet, you exist under ABC Company's rules". Once every major company is under the same lockstep up to and including the internet backbone companies themselves in enforcing de-facto laws not actually on the books, it's over. We're hanging by a thread right now.

I think it's a little of A and a little of B ... in Huxley's world, everyone was cared for .. cared for ... and drugged (soma is to weed/SSRIs/other prescriptions) but the people who rose above their programming were just sent to be with others who broke free of their programming ... not disappeared or tortured (or at least that's what the controllers said; who knows) .. ancient people were not educated; just preserved. Everyone belonged to everyone (polyamorism, dissolving the family, diminishing the importance of long term relationships) .. and of course, the manufacturing and cloning of humans in an Indian like caste system (why would a Gamma want to be with a Beta?).We have the hard left who are for child sex hormones, anti-kid, cult-raising of kids, or aborting kids (combination of each) .. but we also have Jan 6th political prisoners (Bush tortured people over there so now we could torture people over here). We see the rewriting of history (Ministry of Truth) but without the CCP harsh censorship, just burying old stories with new stories (which feels more Huxley) ...Parts of both worlds are in play, and 1984 is very possible, more so in the EU/AU regions that showed their propensity for straight up totalitarianism. Parts of the US went down that route, but US court systems were way more robust and provided a lot of wins (stopping the OSHA mandate, NY's court ordering backpay to city workers pending appeal, Rittenhouse's innocence). The US also had South Dakota (the state that never closed down by government order) and Florida/Georgia (opened up early and never closed down again), but they also had a lot of losses too (Chaven/Floyd, Alex Jones, stolen elections, etc.)Don't think 1984 can't happen in the west. We're closer than you think.
