@drhonor You can follow people on different instances (so long as the instance isn't blocked by yourself or instance-wide by the local moderators). You have your Home feed, which shows you posts ("toots") from people you follow. The Local feed shows posts from others on the same instance. The Federated feed shows outside posts that have been pulled into the local instance by local followers.
