@Gargron I'm not quite sure what kind of work you have to do, but the key more often than not is delegation. Either to specific individuals or even closing a specific instance for new users and pointing to all the other instances.

@pthenq1 @Gargron Perhaps it would also be wise to display or at least link the list on every registration page of any instance, especially for Mastodon.social. Most people join the "main server" without understanding the concept of federated networks.

I rarely talk about how tough this job can be, since I feel responsibility to only associate positive things with the project. But it is a lot of responsibilities, and a lot of stress, for what can sometimes feel like inadequate pay.

@jdaviescoates @Blort my understanding is that LiberaPay, despite being ostensibly open source, can't easily (or at all?) be implemented by others. So far as I'm aware, there's only one instance of Liberapay. I'd need to investigate the situation further to say anything definitive, but it makes me cautious.

Having multiple instances would be quite difficult, rather inefficient, and I don't think it could be an open network like the Fediverse because I don't see how we could avoid having to require that the creation of a new instance be approved by the others.

@jdaviescoates @lightweight @Blort People are able to do that, just not with the Liberapay software. One of Liberapay's goals is to create a network effect, so it can only be either a single service or a network of interconnected services. Since the latter is much more complicated, I focus on the former and make no effort to facilitate the use of the Liberapay software by others. However, Liberapay is open source, can be forked, and is itself a fork of a previous project.

@gargronYour hard work is very much appreciated. Maybe, though, upgrading the infrastructure behind mastodon.social is counter-productive. It just leads to the next wave of new arrivals assuming that this is "the" instance to register at, ad infinitum. Maybe limiting the account count on your instance would give you peace of mind, and ultimately distribute accounts more evenly among instances.
