Mastodon is a bit like #RStats before RStudio came along.And I do get the impression it needs something like RStudio if it is to become a tool for the 99%, as opposed to a tool for the 1%.And like #RStats, there seem to be some who want it to remain a niche tool, because it serves them well like this (fair enough, I say, but understand the consequences).

@Mehrad 1. Not hugely accessible to the majority of people (people call it things like clunky, complex, too difficult...)2 Little emphasis on user experience (Sweave Vs. rmarkdown). Sweave was made for the needs of a small group of people, rmarkdown with the needs of a wider community in mind.3. No/few professional programmers working on this full-time, and little financial security.

@ERDonnachie 1. Mastodon is hugely accessible. There are thousands of instances that accept new registration, and on top of that users can spin their own instance of they want to. There are hostings that do all the technical maintenance for you and you get to be the moderator/admin of your own instance. 🧵 👇🏼

The fact that it is highly customizable and works perfectly everywhere (computer, mobile webapp, mobile app, ...) has made it the top choice for large organizations like European Union to have their own instance. Also Mastodon (unlike Twitter, facebook, Google+, and etc.) also let the user to provide caption for the attached images for visually impaired people. 🧵 👇🏼

It didn't work back then, and there hasn't been a new release for quite a while. You might want to verify the tools listed are actually working properly.
