Open world games all suck. Open world games that are good are good games IN SPITE of being open world.RT: https://poa.st/objects/e20eda8d-0607-4896-a850-95deec90153c

@deVoid “OpenWorld” has been the worst gimmick possible to ever infect gaming.

@deVoid Can't say I care for linear games in particular, aside from the advantage of development resource pooling.

@numberonedonaldtrumpfan @EdBoatConnoisseur All the “good” open world games are completely handicapped by the gimmick and are still good inspite of it.

Sekiro makes me wish I was playing Nioh instead but autism aside, this is a perfect example. A proper Souls game has arcade pacing which makes it extremely replayable. Elden Souls is almost completely unreplayable.

@numberonedonaldtrumpfan @EdBoatConnoisseur @deVoid This is about where I am, as much as there are things I dislike about BotW's open world it's still better than a lot of Zelda games, something like Xenoblade is a lot better than most JRPGs.

@LittleTom @numberonedonaldtrumpfan @EdBoatConnoisseur Xenoblade is more or less what OP is about, it’s not really open world. It’s segmented into rooms still just scaled up.

@deVoid @numberonedonaldtrumpfan @EdBoatConnoisseur Yeah I figured you might have been making that distinction, I agree, I do think it's a lot better. Something like that is much more of what I had hoped Elden Ring would be.

@deVoid @DrRyanSkelton all the trash items and most of what even has the potential to be useful is effectively trash because why bother picking and upgrading another weapon when the grug zweihander you picked up 2 hours in completely shreks everything.

@LittleTom @numberonedonaldtrumpfan @EdBoatConnoisseur @deVoid The key to what makes an open world fun I have discovered is how fun is it to traverse your sandbox from point A to B. Spider Man is a completely open sandbox and I have not used the fast travel option once since starting the game. BoTW makes it fun to be able to discover locations by climbing/using your glider. Then when you REALLY test the mechanics by using your tablet powers by freezing objects and launching yourself off of them makes stuff feel fresh again on the second playthrough. The main problem is due to how limited the Switch is, a lot of the world is just filled with Korok seeds.

@reloadedAK @numberonedonaldtrumpfan @EdBoatConnoisseur @deVoid Yeah traversal mechanics are really important for these kinds of games. It's a big part of why I ultimately prefer BotW to Elden Ring.

@LittleTom @numberonedonaldtrumpfan @EdBoatConnoisseur @deVoid With Elden Ring, the funny thing is you could treat it like a normal Dark Souls by just doing all the legacy dungeons and whatever else is necessary after the first go round to get to the end of the game normally and still get through it in roughly the same amount of time as a Dark Souls NG+ playthrough I think. Issue with that is, to me, is some of the BEST content in Elden Ring is some of the side locations. Nokstella and the other underground areas really hit that first time in Anor Londo or first time discovering Irythill in the Boreal Valley in DS 3. Striking locations to peruse and see what secrets it holds.

@reloadedAK @LittleTom @numberonedonaldtrumpfan @EdBoatConnoisseur I’m of the opinion stormveil castle was the best area in the game and everything else was downhill from there.

@deVoid @LittleTom @numberonedonaldtrumpfan @EdBoatConnoisseur Stormveil was definitely a best step forward when it comes to the legacy dungeons (found the faggot theif stealing a portion of my souls every time I died by taking the side route interesting) but when it comes to striking locales and how fun it is to see how far the route took you, Nokstella took the cake for me, especially when you got to the field areas and saw the pseudo night sky for the first time (retarded horn archers aside) never really wore on me afterwards.

@numberonedonaldtrumpfan @EdBoatConnoisseur @deVoid Agreed. They can be brilliant or just as cookie cutter and repetitive as other games. To do open world to it's full potential is stupidly expensive and the big publishers are all cucked, money grubbing ass holes these days and I think the format suffers from that association. The GTA games were very immersive, as was RDR. Some games make use of open world terrain very well like Death Stranding. Some of the most immersive games are open world. Cyberpunk (though it lacked/lacks polish on some levels) was an amazing looking world that felt lived in and finely crafted. Kingdom Come was practically real for me.On the other hand the Doom games were very refreshing with their fine detailed, intricate maps and I'm glad they executed the way they did. Going back and playing Half Life 1: Black Mesa was invigorating, it was linear but you had to figure out the puzzles/paths and it never felt like it was holding your hand. I don't get hung up too much on format (although I suck at platformers and don't play too terribly many). There are good and bad and mediocre games in every format and at every price point.

@LittleTom @reloadedAK @numberonedonaldtrumpfan @EdBoatConnoisseur @deVoid I like Elden Rings mix of finely crafted dungeons and open world hijinks. It gave me choices for my play session, added a lot of weight to the big intricate stuff and made the world feel huge. However I will say my favorite parts of the game were the dungeon areas that were more like DS3.
