@Gargron An important question now that more and more people are switching from Twitter to Mastodon (including users who have different ideas about manners): how are the rules of this instance determined, and by whom?

@cbontenbal Rules of this server are determined by me. Those unsatisfied with the rules can find a server with different rules, or host their own.

@Gargron It would be cool if a system could be created to set the rules together democratically.

Caspar,You will soon see you're under the thumb of the most over-privileged, sheltered, liberal tyrant imaginable. Little Harry Potter believes the sun & moon revolve around him & that he owns the word "Mastodon" in every nation. When you are tired of dealing with such an entitled child, come over to @Mastodon.tech where we follow the software license of a very different German, the down-to-earth @lain. Lain's Pleroma software runs better than the bloated "Mastodon" which is fast headed into obsolescence due to the coming abandonment of "Ruby" by the programing community. Pay attention to the way Ruby's too many dependencies cause server problems as both Mastodon.social & Mastodon.online can't scale to the increasing number of returning members. @FediTips @curtis @alex

@cbontenbal@mastodon.social Or you could create your own instance and make whatever rules you want. In an ideal fediverse model users would not be dependent upon large instances beholden to a tiny cadre of admins and mods. Users would maintain small instances comprised of friends/family or single-user instances which housed themselves alone. There's no reason you couldn't have a "democratically" determined rule-set, however. You could, as stated, run that experiment on your own by creating your own instance with this policy. There are loads of people on the fediverse who would be more than happy to help you spin one up (myself included). @Gargron@mastodon.social

@kino @Gargron @cbontenbal Once upon a time people had their own websites. Having a fedi server even if a server of one fees like that tradition.

@ins0mniak@freespeechextremist.com It's amazing to talk to people who have no conception of the internet or networking outside of Facebook, Google, Twitter, et al.. As though nothing existed before or that there are not and have never been alternatives. The internet used to be a beautiful place before the advent of these large tech corporations and data-mining cartels. We have communities, we worked together, we built things--our own things. It was a vast, open, diverse digital world waiting to be discovered.i want the internet, and computation as a whole, to explode into an uncountable number of highly heterogeneous domains that can never again be re-united, and have this quality be so obvious that nobody ever even tries. i want there to be domains outside of yours, and for them to be taxing but rewarding to access.-- Phoebe "dog star" J., timeflayer.com@Gargron@mastodon.social @cbontenbal@mastodon.social

@kino @Gargron @cbontenbal Imagine how fun, crazy and psychedelic the internet was back in the day and what it could look like now if that had been allowed to continue. Now, it's nothing but a fucking shopping mall with bland shit websites that all look the same. Corpo branding for it all man. I'm telling man, we're living in some cyberpunk hellscape.Just look at the reaction the entire media is having now that Elon bought Twitter. I haven't seen a meltdown like this in years. All because he said "people should be allowed to speak"
