#Weekend in #science also means to review papers of others researchers. It is actually work because one needs to check many different things: plausability, completeness of data, correctness of methods and interpretations, typos, references and sometimes giving advice on how to improve parts. For non-#academics: No, I'm not paid. Yes, it is normal not to be paid. It is expected to do that and to do it in your "free time".It's part of being a #scientist.

@dr_norb And it is some of the most important work, because there's not exactly an abundance of academics willing to spend time on peer review.I'd dare say this is one of the biggest crises of science we're currently facing, worse than the general public trust in the scientific community.

@neglesaks I agree. I am editor for two #journals myself, and finding good #reviewers is so so hard. #AcademicPublishing is in a deep crisis, and fair and good peer review is worth but also as rare as gold.

@dr_norb Yes, this echoes my connections in academia, specifically maths, where some major capacities in their field are completely turned off the idea of doing PR (here: Peer Review, not Public Relations :) because that their efforts have been grossly abused in the past. One said that they've had several cases of doctoral students that just spam-submit while doing little to NO correction on their papers after getting feedback. This leaves people royally pissed off, and I understand that fully.

@neglesaks Yes, authors that refuse to correct issues are as annoying as reviewers who abuse their role to push their papers or block others peoples research. Then, it is the editors' job to make the right calls.
