       @poggingfish The actual instance itself is pretty tidy. Media is the big issue. You can get away with local storage if you have a BIG DRIVE or aren't very federated and don't have a lot of users, but many public instances use an S3 solution

       @esdin Why couldn’t something like mastodon not download the entire media but just include a hyperlink to it? Or is that something about the decentralization

       @poggingfish @esdin mastodon won't do that, but pleroma and misskey can be configured to behave that way, either by proxying through the server each time, or by having the frontend request directly from the original server.

       @poggingfish https://animesexual.community is only using like 30gb on my vps though, cause I clear external cache daily.if you don't add any relays then you'll only receive posts from people you follow which probably won't need much
