Hello! I'm Chris. I'm a Senior Product Designer at DrDoctor. I work on an online appointment booking system which public hospitals use across the UK.I post links to articles about UX, UI, and service design that I come across which I find interesting and which other practicioners might also like. I'm interested in #opensource tech and using design for positive change in the world.#introduction

@chriswoodThat sounds pretty cool. Is this DrDoctor an open source project?

@grob I’m afraid not. However, they aren’t building a walled garden either. The company’s goal is to build a platform that integrates with as many different systems as hospitals use, and allow other platforms to tap into their integration as well, so hospitals aren’t locked into one monolithic piece of software which forces them to do things a certain way. It’s a really nice company to work for, and everyone I’ve met so far is very driven to help our struggling health system.

@chriswoodAh, cool anyway. Think about coming to Germany with it. There is some software here which got infamous for being a privacy and security baddy, for general practioners's appointments, though. Maybe there's some room for better software?

@chriswood do you ever come across #opensource projects with #contentdesign needs? I believe people who need hands on experience in content design could contribute to open-source projects in some cases making a win-win.

@resing that’s a great idea! I haven’t seen any projects specifically asking for content designers, but that could be from a low of awareness of what content design is. Content designers could be helpful additions to any projects looking for UI and UX support, as they could help inform the structure and flow of information with users’ needs in mind. @owncast is looking for UI help at the moment and I wonder if they’d be open to content designers as well?

Thanks @chriswood for the feedback and the lead. Let me know if you think of others. @owncast if you can share github issues or other details, I'm happy to broadcast to my network. I've had probably a dozen content designers, so far, looking to get hands-on experience ask how they could contribute to open source

@resing @pixelfed, an open-source Instagram alternative, is also redesigning its website. I wonder if the creator, @dansup would be interested in any help with designing the content for the new website? Here's a WIP shot:https://mastodon.social/@pixelfed/109273733245855992

@chriswood @pixelfed @dansup thanks for sharing! I've sent two aspiring content designers a link to the "how to contribute to Opencast" page. Is there a similar one for this project? Thinking this through, there may be a bit of a learning curve, so I wrote a kind-of contributing 101 article https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/open-source-ux-writing-example-from-mastodon-tom-resing

@chriswood Hi Chris , something I’ve always wondered … does the NHS have a joined up/global booking system? So say a specialist books me an appt, do they know what other appts with other services I have? (You may not be at liberty to say).

@straygoat NHS England is made up of lots of different organisations who autonomously decide how to manage healthcare in their area. This includes deciding which software to use. As a result, how bookings are handled varies depending on which health service you're engaging with. You can find out more about the structure of the NHS in England here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEARD4I3xtE

@straygoat Hello! Good question.NHS England is made up of lots of different organisations who autonomously decide how to manage healthcare in their area. This includes deciding which software to use. As a result, how bookings are handled and shared varies depending on where you are and which health provider you're engaging with. You can find out more about the structure of the NHS in England here, which explains how the different parts work together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEARD4I3xtE

@chriswood Ah that explains it. I always wondered why I’d get appts with specialists but the times would clash. Shame there isn’t some universal system for all the others to connect to. Thanks for the info.
