wait wait, so I don't see all replies? why is the hashtag search so broken? what do you mean, "don't make your account at mastodon.social", where do I join then? this user is here since 2018 but I don't see any toots in their profile page? where's the quote-retweet? how do I find people to follow??A futuristic Mastodon introduction for 2021: Focusing on things that come up frequently and I don’t see explained that often.https://wordsmith.social/elilla/a-futuristic-mastodon-introduction-for-2021

@thatonecalculator @elilla misskey and akkoma aren't mastodon, and their quote-RT's just appear as links here.

@elilla why not make it about fedi instead of mastodon?

@waifu it is about the fedi, for people who are joining via mastodon; the distinction should be clear in the text.

@elilla Rad, thank you for writing this (and thanks to everyone who contributed). This is a really really good introduction! An interesting aspect of the last point you make: "But how do I promote my toots to a large audience in a system like this?"My experience is that when sharing something I made on Fedi, I get WAY more comments, feedback, and shares than I ever got on Twitter. It's almost like... people genuinely engage with things here vs being manipulated into it over there :thaenkin:

@kookie it's both things I think: no one ever gets hundreds of thousands of boosts, but everyone can get actual engagement rather than having to be on either side of parasocial idol worship dynamics.

@elilla yea, that's true! 4-digit boosts is pretty extreme on here. But at the same time, when I share things I'm actually proud of I don't really care? I want people to look at the link I post, or talk to me about the thing I posted.I also remember artists pointing out that they can easily sell sketches on here even though they technically have less followers or whatever.

@kookie yup! masto taught me that those huge numbers were a mirage and maximising reach/discoverability at any cost is a red herring. what is it that we're looking for when we chase the numbers? like here I post about my interests and I get between 2 to 10 likes, maybe 30 if I go viral, if I post my boobs like 50. but like the 50 people are all cool and are never shitty about it and make me feel safe and loved and seen, and when I have trouble everyone helps me and when I help folks they are genuinely grateful, and over time I know most of my regular audience by name and gender and fursona, and the % that ends up irl friends means my house is never empty. (being euphemistic here.)part of me will always want to be a fashion queen glamtifa influencer worshipped by millions but I'm also aware that if I was actually one, my social life would be a lot less satisfying than it is right now.

@elilla I'm gonna edit the blog post I published yesterday about deleting my Twitter account and add a link to this guide at the end (where I briefly talk about the fediverse) :blobcatmeltlove:

@waifu haha no let's not make information sharing into a duel, criticism is welcome when it's to make things better, and I appreciate that you stand for the value of the fediverse itself rather than only the twiittery app with antifederalist devs.

@s8n @elilla @waifu that faggot literally defederates everyone. It’s a literal echo-chamber at transmom.love (which sounds like a fetish website anyways, and trannies can’t be moms)

@s8n @elilla @waifu everyone on this side of fedi is defederated afaik. So maybe the tranny hugbox side is still intact. I find that hard to believe considering his griping tho.

@elillaThis piece convinced me that the partial view each instance has of the network is a feature not a bug. I've never seen the benefits explained so well. Beautifully written.

@elilla> Why am I not seeing all replies to somebody’s thread?Afaik in the example mentioned there, B's reply actually will be visible, as A's instance will forward replies to A's posts (which in turn includes A's reply to B's post). Or at least that has been my impression, and I think I’ve read some explanation like this somewhere 😅

@elilla Also re the next section: Anyone know how favs actually federate? Because I’m pretty much never seeing mutual A having faved mutual B's post (unless one of them is on my instance), but some very rare times I can see someone from a remote instance having faved a post from a different remote instance :blobcatthinking:

@ilja @trisschen oh I didn't know that was implementation-specific, thanks for the detail
