This morning I'm advising my university's compsci department on industry trends. This is were I try to protect young minds from the people who want them to learn Java.

@kemonine So seriously, the big question is whether we're educating them in what's best for the students, or what's best for the local companies who want to hire them?

@tek I've heard that modern Java is a lot nicer than the version I had to code in 10 years ago, but I'm very happy with C#.

@tacoman_x86 I'm sure it's better than it was. I'll stick with Python and Rust, though.

@kemonine Oh, sure. The point of this is teaching them how to learn. It's not supposed to be a trade school.

@tek I've read the Rust book and I'd love to get a job doing it. I just have zero energy to code after hours getting the experience that an employer would want. The eternal conundrum.

The department head at the time I graduated was surprised to find that he gets retirement pay from the state, even though he wasn't there very long. He donates it all to the CompSci department for scholarships. I love him.

@kemonine Those are very good points. And I don't actually hate Java or anything. I'm just pushing back against using this as a trade school, instead of training to be computer scientists.

@tek I recently went back to school for computer security, and one of my intro courses is Java because the main course for object-oriented languages was full. Java is ... not a pleasant language.
