@temporal The original fedi Eternal September was when Mastodon joined back in 2016 ... *checks notes* actually in March, but the Show HN post after which users started pouring in was on October 5th and that's when the weight of the network shifted from Qvitter on quitter.se and related sites to Mastodon on mastodon.social.There have been a couple of waves since then and this is just another wave."Show HN: A new decentralized microblogging platform (github.com/gargron)"https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12646083

Actually the "rowdy instances" wave was in 2016 too, before the Mastodon wave. Those two 2016 waves together may form the Eternal September moment for fedi.

@Moon @clacke @temporal If anyone is curious, this is still one of the best articles that I have seen on the earlier history of fedi: https://robek.world/featured/what-is-gnu-social-and-is-mastodon-social-a-twitter-clone/Hope it helps.

Both of those waves certainly made a shift away from using decentralized social network free software mainly for discussing free software and what decentralized social networking should look like. Now the focus moved toward whatever topics and conflicts the channers, twitterers and others brought with them: anime, furries, freezepeach, social justice, trans rights, blockchain, infosec, anarchism, shitposting, edgeposting ... while still retaining a fair bit of free software and decentralized social networks as two of the many topics, depending on where you look.
