I just tried to make my Mastodon bio a bit more explanatory. I've noticed it can be tough to work out who people are and what they might be posting if you don't recognise their name/profile pic. As character counts are longer there's a chance to say more, and I've opted to explain the kinds of things I'm likely to post, not where I work, so people can see what they're in for. This feels like a chance to build community with intention, not just replicate Twitter, so am up for exploring that.

I'd like to tend to Mastodon community building "like we're in the early days of a better nation", and am keen to compare notes with others how to do that. Need to work out how to make crossposting selective too (any tips?)

@rachelcoldicutt @ianames What cross posting thing do you use. I have a feeling the one I set up aeons ago had an option to only xpost based on a hashtag.

@rachelcoldicutt I find crossposting awkward, as the nicks don't map between Mastodon and Twitter. especially on Mastodon you get a lot of mentions that should hyperlink but don’t. it would be best if xposted tweets kept their twitter links. by the way, there seems to be a current of thought on Mastodon that TT should not be touched at all, that people should avoid opening up Twitter (which is probably a good reason to crosspost, but also quite weird for me, coming from a strong belief in interoperability).

@tarkowski @rachelcoldicutt it's a tricky one, but this is why we have nitter, and some fedi clients can be set automatically replace twitter links etc with alternative services. @apps for example does this. I think tusky does as well?I say this as someone who crossposts specific things from the bird site for specific reasons. I find doing so in the other direction awkward. But not retweet.

@onepict @tarkowski @apps yes I need to sort this out as it's not working as I want it to at the moment - just getting my head round nitter

@rachelcoldicutt @tarkowski @apps I use moa Bridge and I deliberately set it to not crossposts my boosts from twitter, so I keep concise in my points in this direction. I hate split toots. But doing that does open up for more interesting conversations here in the Fediverse. Which I quite like.If you've been in spaces like tumblr the content warning functionionality is good here as well. So people can filter.
