Daughter got 3 quarters in change from book fair today. Asked why one was blue and crusty.Told her blue quarters were once put in an arcade machine but didn't quite make it into the cashbox, and hung out in the dusty grime at the bottom of the machine getting peed on by mice for twenty or thirty years.

I've got loads of blue crusty mouse-pee quarters. I like coins, I like that they survive long enough to tell stories.

Some of these stories are "I hit the coin chute funny and fell somewhere weird and got peed on for three decades"

Every time I think about coins I get angry, that's probably not a good thing for a man of my professionI'm gonna write a blog post about this one day, this whole American Money Sucks thing

@ifixcoinops This might be flamebait, but how do you feel about dollar coins? Do you think they are a good idea in theory? How did the US screw up the execution? (Clearly something went wrong, otherwise we'd all be using dollar coins.)How about the half dollar, while we're at it?

@skyfaller I think they're absolutely essential. Having folding paper money worth one dollar is madness, moreso when the paper money is such a mess that the one-dollar note is indistinguishable by touch from a 100-dollar note. I don't think there are any other countries with such worthless coins as the US. It's a shame there was so much grift and corruption around their introduction... see this is why I need to write a blog post

@ifixcoinops @skyfaller I thought the US executed the Sacagawea dollar coin well, though I was working food service in an amusement park at the time and fed a lot of Coca-Cola-backed pro-dollar coin propaganda. But I also handled a ton of them and gave a ton as change. From my perspective what “killed” the dollar coin was everything in the US was already moving “plastic-first” or “plastic-only” and cash was already a “throwback” then to some people. They didn’t want new things to learn.

@ifixcoinops @skyfaller (Dollar coins aren’t technically dead. They are still in live circulation and any bank in the US is supposed to be able to get you rolls of them on request. They make fun holiday gifts when you are “that uncle” that has no better idea than cash but wants to gift it in a fun way.)

@max The problem with $1 coins is the same as $2 bills: tills that don't accommodate them. Both are legal tender (the gov't actually stockpiles $2 bills for the apocalypse), and most machines will accept them even if it's not listed, but they are a nightmare for cashiers (if they don't call the cops for presenting a $2 because most people think they're counterfeit and many in circulation don't pass marker tests because they don't get replaced fast enough).Blame capitalism.

@bluestarultor Tills don’t have dedicated space for $50/$100 bills either, but cashiers have taken those for ages. Most tills have overflow space “under the drawer”. Most tills I’ve seen don’t even mark the sections and bill and coin ordering are company policies or preferences.

@bluestarultor When I was handling a lot of Sacagaweas you could put them on top or below your $1 bills or you could even mix them into any other coin section. The color and feel was different enough you weren’t worried about confusion at all when mixed with other coins even quarters. As a cashier, handling them was the *easy* part. Dealing with customers yelling at me that I gave them “arcade tokens” for change or preferred wads of bills was the challenge.

@max@smeap.com @bluestarultor@tech.lgbt every time i have cashiered, the dollar coins went in the $20 slot since it starts empty. i handed them out and never got pushback, but oddly enough i routinely got shit from other stores when using them. weird.another fun situation was a pizza place that kept, no joke, at most $15 in the drawer. you had best have exact change..
