My favorite quail died this weekend, something spooked her and she cracked her head on the enclosure, she had a big ol’ welt and was acting sluggish but I checked on her a few times she seemed to be hanging in there, but the next day she was gone 😭 She was the only offspring of the rooster I’m getting rid of soon, who frankly is the bird I want most to breed, but he’s basically senile at this point. (They’re big, white birds with a gentle temperament…) Double 😭 As a side note: the enclosure is really short specifically to prevent them from hitting their heads too hard, but I’ve had 4 injuries and 3 deaths that I strongly suspect are from hitting their heads…

@Frondeur @ademan Look into raising utility pigeons(Like utility King Pigeons) of you want more meat. The birds are a bit expensive to start but they grow fast.

Yeah, I kept them indoors (garage) pretty uneventfully for a year and a half, finally moved them outside and it’s been a real struggle. All but one hen has stopped laying, the males have lost their foam pouches, it’s crazy. (Basically, it looks like they’re not producing enough/any foam for reproduction anymore)I do wonder if it’s just the added stress of being outside, and they can still reproduce, they just no longer have excess, but yeah, not great.

I don’t, and it won’t be practical to give them one unfortunately. I knew they are sensitive to changes in daylight but I figured that wouldn’t be a problem until november/december.

@ademan @Frondeur I don't even remember if the light really helped much, just that as soon as it started getting cooler the eggs stopped flowing (which made me get a light emitting heat lamp) I think it did help, just took a week or so for it to 'kick in'... foggy
