Ace Week :asexual_flag: That's right, it's a whole seven day long week for asexual awarenesses, education, and celebration 🎉There's like an official org with a programme (https://aceweek.org/), and there's all kinds of people doing their own thing, but I just want to say that I love being ace and I love my fellow aces out there :heart_ace: :heart_ace: #AceWeek

(I think it was thanks to ace week or some other ace thing on the fediverse that I learned about asexuality, and that I got to realize I'm ace, so I'm hoping to pay it forward)

So asexuality is a sexual orientation like homosexuality, bisexuality, and heterosexuality, and it's usually defined like "feeling little or no sexual attraction to others". But it's a super broad spectrum, with lots of sub-identities, and all kinds of fun microlabels. That's one of the reasons we say 'ace', it's nice and broad.1/2

There's also critiques of the way categorizing sexualities functions/functioned as a means of controlling sexuality, and calling someone or a group of people '-sexual' harkens back to that. So a vaguely defined casual feeling word like 'ace' better captures an approach that avoids that's, and at some point it's best to forget the first sentence I typed - that was the square way to describe it.2/2

3/2Aces are stereotypically bad at describing the sexual attraction they don't feel, it's one of the weird fun parts of being ace. This can cause a lot of doubt though, and make it hard to figure out if one is 'truly ace'.Which is I think one of the reasons we try not to gatekeep ace identities too much, and tell people to try out the label. It's all good.

4/2There's a lot to learn about sex and the social stuff around it from an ace point of view, and I personally think that's one of the more empowering things to find here.(Sorry, I'm bad at thread counting)
