@Stellar Somewhat. But when I buy in bulk like this I effectively only pay 7€ for the main meal of each pack.A standalone meal costs about 11€ and a ration pack like this costs about 19€I bought a bulk of 24 ration packs for around 400€, which should be at least like 5 weeks worth of lunch.

@Stellar Well I live in Norway. The standard lunch here is just some slices of bread with topping. Even then I'm sure a typical lunch costs more than 1€ to prep. If you want to buy something at the store expect to pay like 5€ for some pastries and a drink.MREs aren't an economical way to eat by any means. But it's not that bad when you consider that it's mostly dinners, rather than regular lunches.

It's just a meal, vacuum packed and just needs heat. Somehow they managed to achieve 1 year expiry, even though I don't see any real preservatives in the ingredients list.They're about 550 kcal each, which is a bit small for me, but it's only ~3 eur for each. Bought a box of them on impulse, but sadly the choice is really small (only 6 different meals, and 2 of them dedicated to vegan stuff) so they get boring fast.

But probably to use some of their excess capacity, REAL started selling consumer versions which are orange, have smaller portion sizes and are marketed as hiking meals with a pretty photo of the food rather than just saying "FULL MEAL".I guess they decided to just reuse most of the templates and whatnot for the military versions as well to reduce the amount of unique tooling.

Also, protip: have some salt and spices at the places where you most frequently eat. I usually have salt, pepper and nutmeg at work, pepper is especially recommended for getting soups and sauces to taste right.

@fristi I would've added some pepper, but I have mostly commited to eating these as-is. It's kind of the point of MREs.I hit the fill line almost exactly (was barely 1mm under) so the amount of water should be correct. It being pasta means it takes ages to absorb the water and absorbs a lot of it too, so tweaking the water amount to preference isn't easy with the pasta-based ones.

Day 8 (12.10):Couscous with Lentils and Spinach, 7/10Very nice. Doesn't taste as depressing as it sounds, there's pieces of other vegetables too in there (I assume the orange ones are carrots for example). Pleasantly surprised. Could honestly consider making it at home.

Day 10 (Today):Chicken Tikka Masala, 6/10Doesn't taste like any Tikka Masala I've had. The mulligatawny had more flavor than this one. But it still has plenty of flavor. Tastes more like "Generic Indian Stew" than Tikka Masala. But I guess Tikka Masala isn't "real" indian food in the first place. Still a very enjoyable eat, but not close to any Tikka Masala I've ever heard of.

@fluffy Tastes like any other freeze-dried coffee.The pack doesn't specify a water amount so I dunno how strong it's supposed to be. But it has that kind of "dusty" and mild coffee flavor that I'd expect from other freeze dried coffes like Nescafe gold or something

Day 11:Chili con Carne, 4/10Maybe it's all the large beans, but it doesn't seem to rehydrate properly, even though I added extra water. The meat also seems to be some weird reconstructed stuff and I can't even make out the pieces in it (listed as "meat pudding" on ingredients list). Overall it has a weird ass grainy texture.The sauce has a decent chili flavor, but otherwise I'd take a microwave meal over this one.

Day 12:Pasta Provence, 8/10Dunno what the heck this is supposed to taste like, but it was a pretty decent creamy sauce and decently sized pieces of meat. The most prominent taste in the sauce was of Onion. Didn't have a lot of meat flavor despite the large pieces however.

Day 18 (Friday)Pasta in Tomato sauce, 8/10They call it a tomato sauce, but it's obviously meant to be some weird attempts vegan bolognese. Not that much tomato flavor and it's instead spiced to to be very savory or "meat-ish" in taste. Overall it tastes like a pasta bolognese, but something is missing. Still good though.
