huh, this is nuts...Russia used to provide 40% of Europe's gas, but now Norway is the one doing that, and Russia is at 9%.our tiny country is providing 40% of Europe's gas, lol, wtf

@thor @beschissen If the prices get high enough maybe it'll be worth it to sell from those massive strategic reserves. Or just to cover those last 9% and help Europe not fund the Russian army.

@clacke @beschissen strategic reserves is news to me. don't think the media has ever mentioned those.i think the offshore industry would only be too happy to sell more.it's not the government that controls prices or how much is sold. the government just issues licenses to oil companies.building more infrastructure takes time. demand for our gas, and also our electricity, is unusually high these days. some accuse Norway of being war profiteers.

@thor @beschissen Yeah, I'm trying and failing to find a reference. Maybe I'm just assuming they have them, but it would make sense to me as a buffer complementary to the enormous sovereign wealth fund to ride down gently when we reach peak oil.

@clacke @beschissen the EU appears to be pushing for a price cap, a position the Norwegian government doesn't share.Norway's approach to these skyrocketing energy prices? subsidise the electricity bills.it's funny how relative the perspectives are. domestically, the government has been criticised for being too slow with implementing the subsidies. meanwhile, in much of Europe, there are no subsidies at all...

@clacke @beschissen when it comes to our pipelines and infrastructure, i heard on the radio that experts have been warning that national security pertaining to those has been neglected.Norway has suddenly found itself in a position where Russia might be very interested in wreaking havoc on our infrastructure.the defense/intelligence experts are saying "told you so"

@clacke @beschissen i think the general attitude has been "who would want to attack us? we're so small."but then... oh... we're providing 40% of Europe's gas.Putin might actually want to pull some shit on us.

@clacke @beschissen yes, the petroleum industry has been selling gas, but, well, i do feel that the general public, and perhaps also our politicians, have been suddenly made aware of gas as a thing to pay attention to.

@beschissen as i understand it, doing anything to Finland would be a nightmare.they're *very* prepared for a Russian invasion. i believe that's one of the main scenarios the Finnish army practices for.

@Arrian @beschissen for completeness: the main scenario that the Norwegian army practices for is ALSO an invasion by Russia.but seeing as the Finnish have been preparing to defend themselves *without* NATO for decades, i suspect they're better prepared than we are...

@thor @Arrian @beschissen In the 80s the Swedish military trained for an attack from Russia, like they had for hundreds of years. In the 90s this changed completely. We trained for an attack from ... an unnamed enemy with great military resources, that might attack from e.g. the east of Sweden. Completely different scenario. 😁

@Arrian @beschissen in Norway, the general scheme for defence if Russia tried to invade is basically "try to hold them back until NATO reinforcements come"Finland wasn't a NATO member, so it had to prepare to fight it out on its own.

@beschissen @thor You don't automatically get gas if you drill for oil. Different equipment and infra.

@clacke @beschissen as a Norwegian, i should know that, but i don't. being from this country doesn't automatically make you an expert on that industry.i sort of just assumed the gas was a byproduct of oil exploitation.

@thor @beschissen ... but then you have to do that. =)When you drill, you might find a pocket with mostly oil or mostly gas and you'll choose which one you drill for depending on which one you're good at. There will often be one where there is the other, but the proportions vary.

@clacke @beschissen maybe you should work in the Norwegian offshore industry. 😏 from what i've heard, it's hard work, but you get extended periods of time off.basically, you cycle between "lots of work" and "vacation", and you get paid handsomely.

@clacke @beschissen i don't know how life is for people setting up new oil platforms these days, but back in the 70s, when this whole oil thing was getting off the ground, you had deep sea divers going down, and it was dangerous work. people lost their lives and were permanently incapacitated from that work. it took decades before they got compensated for the workplace injuries, despite contributing massively to society.
