Got some work still for the future but I don't think that will be in time.. ๐ I'm still โฌ257 short for past months server bill and rent and energy are crawling up my neck :blobcatscared:โ Next month our Matrix server will be gone and I'm gonna cut some more non-essential services, sorry I don't know what else to do right now. @stux Maybe, just maybe, think about the possibility you need to terminate ALL services, including mstdn. How bad is that, really? As long as you have food, schelter and work it's okay. Or maybe make it paid partly, free as in freedom not as in gratis.

@Jain I have tried but I ran into issues with media upload/convertion to Wasabi :sad_dog:โ I can go give it antoher shot indeed! At the time I couldn't find any other admins with such a big server who had kinda the same setup for guidance.. I did ask Eugen but yeah..

@stux whats the issue with convertion? im guessing that all resources are then used to convert and nothing is left for the main application? thats what happened on my masto server all the time...lets say, theoretically, if we find a way to offload the conversation process to a different server, it would only affect this server and may have a latency / fails on uploading stuff right? if there is a way to offload it, im pretty sure one would be able to load balance the conversation process onto multiple servers... do you now a bit more detail informations on how or what part of masto triggers the conversation process?if we could get masto to pass all the media as it is to a s3, there might be a way to setup a s3 loadbalancer and pass the requests to a proxy on a different server, which then would convert things and upload it to wasabi...look, i dont want spend regularly money for mstdn, im more interested in searching a permanent solution, means i would be in to finance some test servers, if you would like to try it again

@Jain Let's see, basically there where 3(or 4) servers in total: 1. Web(front) -> 2. DB(main) -> 3. Streaming -> 4. Sidekiq And I couldn't get the media upload working from front via main(convert) to Wasabi ๐ค It was all internal network via private IP's.------Maybe.. maybe I can leave this server as web and db and move skidekiq and streaming to their own servers :thinktink:โ but that doesnt req loadbalance right?

They run these services out of the goodness of their hearts and are true heroes!If everyone on the instance just donated ONE EUR/GBP/USD... a month then it would go a looooong way to keeping the instance secure into the future.Now...single instance users, you interact with these instances right? So why not donate to them so your contacts using these instances can be kept online for as long as can be!?(to be clear and a little boastful, yes I do donate to mstdn.social, even though I don't use it directly. I also donate to other larger instances I interact with - I want all these people to talk to!)

@stux back then you told me about your optimizations https://github.com/mstdn/Mastodon/commit/fa5746d07b219881086b8d9c41bb2f531b859519 but you never told me about your configurations on other services like your redis settings, or if you use a connection pooler for postgres and the postgres config itself, your puma configuration and much more...theoretically you should be able to scale every serivce by its own like:1-2 puma servers1-2 database server with pgbouncer1-2 sidekiq server1 redis server, two instances one for the critical one for the cacheeach of them according to their own resource need...

@stux I like the reality of this... and feels like it's a constant thing cropping up more often which why I want to respect the re-occurrence with a long post proportional to the extortion of rent and things like this which kills projects and people dead (albeit slowly or indirectly).Billions of people are over-paying in my opinion in order to have these services run or 'roof' over their head and even heavy donations at some point won't cut it (but I do suggest you pay stux and talk about funding more often).To be mindful as things get more expensive is what this post is about.Longer text is for me caring more, so please consider that before letting 'wall of text' syndrome hit you and forever ask why less and less things work.CUP OF TEA MAYBE IF IT HELPS:SO there is an obvious attempt by others to coerce us in acceptance of using monetary things which further increases ultimatums with the same old threats of food cut-off / being homeless etc (just one year savings can be wiped out and even selling your grandma won't help). Many are losing saving right now and not like caring jobs are being made by the plentiful. So perhaps to accept this equation and get better at avoid this is about finding more richer people to hold the umbrella.I was once richer and didn't donate as much as I should have BUT also blame people for not responding or engaging with 'little' or 'stupid' non-coders / non-engineers (which I consider myself somewhat) but for a while I have chosen to be poor as anyway it would have got to this stage and needing to start solving this problem using my life the long run (no more playstation gaming) so rather than people "making-ends-meet" people can find other who can outright pay for things EASILY (maybe with a bit of HUMAN outreach).These excellent / experienced people of the past are needed as part of the overall engine for community (again I think we can do better at spreading the word MORE PERSONALLY *while* working on things together on whatever human level like talking circles about it even if it's about having fun while money literally runs dry- not just work work work / code code code.SUMMARY: That's one half of solution (finding rich nice people) and 2nd half of solution is the longterm game below (in short that we can't win the game of money / spiraling debt / x = [x+%] from banks, they own it and only give it out with debt or % on top. Game over if we only pay money interactions... Read on for more if you really care about life using money and want to spiral human interaction for the time we still have left! Remember people are migrating now from places only because of money (there is plenty to do but the banks and gov don't want to pay or create those job so we have to create our own / give each other something to do also!)SO the other half of finding rich people to help pay, is this battle:understanding rent is a killer and NOT to ignore banks and landlords that are deliberately a politically a losing game for people in that they do literally choose who gets money and who doesn't and basically NEVER listen... to anything lol.So turning the heat up at the same time [especially in 2022] is waiting disaster I suggest teaming up even randomly to give time to show our powers (can't expect all ACES or ALL-STARS, and actually the mass is what is needed either way for engagement).So no use ignoring things getting less as rent goes up more and more (Berlin is a nightmare right now with extortionate prices for 1 bedroom- yes we might pay any price but this is not really possible or worth accepting)NOT IGNORING GREEDI was never a fan of rent as it's proportional to the unwillingness by others and even the opposite which is feeding greed and control held against our own life in the end (even when houses are paid for many times over we still keep on paying).It's political so I expect people to not read anymore but encourage you to think "I'm next also" in the type of Jenga https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenga of price increases and consider everything is politics (tech is born / stemmed from Gov / banks same as everything) so just to pay them is not enough (not anymore) THEY WANT YOU TO CONFORM EVEN MOREWe do risk becoming homeless naturally from this as they directly or indirectly rack up conditions / make things digital-only and up the prices and political heat...This doesn't take away from individual, just I respect it's happening / going to happen to all of us so finding richest-open-source-friendly mentality is key in future to make things lastAs a last note in order for Stux possibly not to see this (as we talk about it before) it's also important to realise without 'salt in the wound' that money is not just a neutral tool and highly developed in many sub-dividing ways (such as being tied to law, negative maths (debt), government spending, public usage of tax by banks (a private company!) etc etc). @stux @privateger @Jain I once heard somebody talking about why they don't do this for an unrelated project, and their response was that, though it is really cheap and easy to scale at first, it gets very expensive when you start needing more bandwidth and by then you can't really migrate away from it because you don't have the software infrastructure to make it work.

I'm sure it's not that big of a deal, but I think in a way it's probably similar to distrohopping from a distro you've used for a year. Takes enough work for one to doubt if it's a good idea.

@stux i haven't read the whole thread, and I totally get how bad it feels to "beg". But your profile at liberapay talks of a weekly goal of 5โฌ. Would it make sense to increase that to a more realistic value? Currently it looks like you're doing super well with 38โฌ/5โฌ.
