@unascribed I say swap "wrong" and "wrongest" as the GTK+2 version has one of those mysterious errors that the average user can't understand, while GNOME Files simply says a technically-true fact that gets the point across to the person who wants to literally create a folder with a / in the name and is confused by why it doesn't exist(I've met this person. He exists. There are more like him.)

@minervissa GNOME 3 is wrongest because it actively prevents you from doing something that has fairly obvious intentGTK+2 is a tiny patch away from just doing it correctly but not having a note about slashes creating subdirectories

@unascribed okay fair but I've seen someone create folders for their music collection with genre names and one of the folders they wanted made was "Soul / Funk" and they were _mad_

@minervissa which is why there should be a notice that it will make a subdirectory

@unascribed KDE's approach is the best approach but it would still fail the aunt tilly test by creating " Funk" and giving someone a hard time later on when they try to use a command on it

@unascribed I'd have to test it myself to see if the space is noticeable or not; I know with "modern" html-backed interfaces the space would be dropped on frontend but not backend and cause headaches

@unascribed my fiancee the other day had her Windows pc stop working and she said "don't worry" and ran a command from memory, just substituting some values and while it did work, if there'd been a nonexistent file she would've broken somethingand she didn't even know what it did exactly, only that the internet said it would work years ago

@unascribed 3 is correct though. You asked it to create a folder, and "/" isn't a valid character for files or folder names.

@unascribed Some newer gnome dialogs you can't even type the name due to a focus bug -- it will instead open a find dialog. It's been a bug for years that was rare, however with Ubuntu 22.04 it's now 100% repo. :3
