Since #37C3 is confirmed ( https://content.events.ccc.de/cfp/37c3/index.en.html ), I'm thinking about submitting a talk about the narratives hackers choose to describe themselves. Let me know what you think about these titles:1. Hackers' narratives on themselves and why they are important2. How cyberpunk stories can hurt hackers and their communities3. The death of a Cyberpunk hacker - the birth of a Solarpunk one4. Cyberpunk is Deprecated. We need a new language#solarpunk #cyberpunk #ccc

@alxd In a Solarpunk world, a hacker would be a lot more of an establishment figure. The day to day work of the role would realistically be much closer to that of a lawyer or legislator. This is because the technical decisions made impact and shape society and require (democratic) community participation.

@urusan Im currently reading the Half Built Garden book and while the focus is somewhere else, this is a part of the world there. I think its a worthwhile vision.

@alxd Hmm. Domestic hacking over here (meanwhile, Germany) has an important social function. Hackers constantly prove, that 100% security is a lie. Therefore proving companies & state institutions wrong again & over again, when they say otherwise. Hacking educates the public and also conveniently points towards the protagonists, who turn themselves into security advisors then, mostly as volunteers. However, it is hacking, and society and its digital realms can't evolve without it today.

@jayrope the problem is that outside Germany and its CCC people very seldomly see hackers as trustworthy - or serving any social function at all. I think there needs to be a conscious effort to change it, it wont happen on its own.

@alxd Well then, please, world, start addressing this now! We're way late to react to societal development of digitization already. No?

@jayrope @alxd I am doing my best, but whenever I point out we hackers should ourselves stop using the h-word to mean "cybercriminal" (you know, for starters), I get over9000 replies that "that's what it means", "the language changes", "it's too late", and so on. 🤷‍♀️ But I'm with you on that.

@rysiek @alxd Where is that exactly? Sounds like the fun of phone-phreaking, 2600 etc. never made it into the mainstream there. That'd be a major loss of highly innovative expertise to your society!

@jayrope @alxd most places outside Germany, from my experience.

@rysiek @jayrope I can +1 this. Outside of Germany, almost every country sees hackers as a threat. USA: very much. Global South? Don't even try telling your government you do cybersecurity, or you can go to jail.

In Germany the CCC is often invites to hearings of your government. They not necessarily listen to them, but at least they are heard. So this is not common in the world? I'm fascinated that there is one single thing in the digital world that seems to be better in Germany than in the rest of the world ...

@alxd I like 4, mostly because using the word "deprecated" to describe cyberpunk amuses me.I often refer to myself as a "#solarpunk, recovering #cyberpunk" Maybe something like "Cyberpunk is Deprecated. Hacker 2.0 is Solarpunk" ?
